Reza Aslan has a thing or two to say about media coverage of Islam.

Speaking with CNN on Monday Aslan criticized comedian Bill Maher for characterizing female genital mutilation as an "Islamic problem," in addition to making several other sweeping generalizations about the faith.

"When it comes to the topic of religion he's not very sophisticated in the way that he thinks," Aslan said.

I think Aslan isn't quite seeing the bigger picture here.. See, most of the time Maher doesn't discuss his own opinions; he only says things he knows his target audience will either applaud or laugh at. I was also fooled at one point, but the more I listen to Bill Maher the more apparent it becomes.

When muslim "brothers and sisters" are out doing barbaric things, nothing.

Reza Aslan is a pretty smart guy, and very well-spoken.

However you have to be a special kind of idiot to claim that Islam doesnt promote violence in many circumstances and then compare it to Buddhism.

Its easy as chit to open up the Quran and find one violent verse after another, and its easy as chit to read Hadiths and the history of the Mohhamed and see one violent act committed after another.

Short of Abraham, Mohhamed was the most violent founder of a major world religion.

Practically EVERY OTHER FOUNDER OF A MAJOR WORLD RELIGION WAS PEACEFUL.

I'm going to skip the whole whether or not Islam really is a religion of peace or violence.

I'll say this.

As someone who has been to the middle east three times. I have met great arabs and muslims, and bad arabs and muslims. There are good and bad people in every religion.

With that said.... some things that are cause for concern or keep me on alert.

1) Simply drawing a picture of mohammed or an Islamic religious figure can lead to an outcry and violence from those within the Muslim community
2) There are some people that speak out against radical islamist violence, but many either keep their mouth shut or stand by and do nothing.
3) Terrorist groups will continue to flourish in that region as long as the people there lack necessary tools, education, and necessities for decent basic living.
