    I've taken up to 12g with no problem just make sure it's really dark any light makes you have the worst sleep ever

    This. There is no negative feedback loop with melatonin therefore rather than a negative feedback loop you show downregulation of the 3 receptor types with exogenous supplementation. You end up needing more and more and unlike some hormones you can't just completely control the amount you have in your system and keep it artificially high. When it is through receptor mediation rather than a direct feedback loop, you DO avoid affecting multiple hormones... but, you end up dependent on more and more earlier.

    Theraputic dose is 300mg (if under like 120lbs I think for adult you start at 200mg). If it does nothing, then they go to 600mg. This is still 3-10x physiologic levels of circulating melatonin. I should add however that there is a problem - we give prescriptive melatonin; the stuff you get in supplement stores isn't subject to quality controls so this *could* affect the overall effectiveness/dosing/etc in a completely unpredictable way (more, less, insoluble so it digests terrible even if you grind it to powder, with lead in it, blah blah). Should be regulated as it is a hormone, but it is what it is. Best of everything

    Start low and see how it goes.
    I actually prefer the lower doses as i have a hard time getting up in the morning with anything above 3mg.
    I don't know if other factors may have played a role but i personally didn't like going over that dosage.

    When something is the fraction of the size of a vitamin it's probably not 12g for future reference. Unless you're swallowing pure Osmium.

    I started low and worked my way up when the lower dosages stopped working. I just make sure I don't take it every night. I'll often take it on nights I feel wide away an hour or two before bed. Weekends I never take it.
    Progressive overload + progressive eating = gains. Simple as that!

    I take 3mg once in a while when I feel I need help. Find it has helped me fall asleep faster, has no effect keeping me asleep though as I still often wake up after 3-4hrs. rarely can I sleep 6-8hrs sleep. Shift work switching from a 7am-7pm to a 7pm-7am shift all in a day really does a number on my sleep, plus having a 2yr old jumping up and down in bed at the crack of dawn is no help either. Not to hijack OP, any recommended sleep aids to help stay asleep?

    When we get prescriptive melatonin at the oharmacy, we just fill it with the OTC melatonin. Literally keep standard OTC melatonin in the back and use as needed for prescriptions. We don't have any stock bottles of melatonin that are from pharmaceutical companies. Not sure what you mean.. Unless you are talking about hospital pharmacies

    I take 3mg for a normal sound sleep. 6mg will put me to sleep solid for about 6 hours and then I'm wiiide awake after that.

    Yeah hospital in my case. I don't know if in the outpatient setting anyone writes scripts here - do you get actual prescriptions to fill, or just written reccomendations that pt's bring in? Now I am curious on your end, where do you practice too? Thanks

    Both. Some written recommendations that people still bring in and think that they will be filled for free (LOL) and some actual written prescriptions which is just an effect of their high hopes for their insurance to cover (99.5% of time they don't and reject it) Most of the time it seems to be actual written OTC prescriptions though. I work in a retail setting for one of the top 2 retail pharm/convenience stores


    I noticed you mentioned you're a doctor.. What specialty? Just curious
