biggest screw up I've had at work

my job is a change over driver,meaning I transport loaded trailers in between depots.

I rang yesterday for my trailer numbers as was told to take 327/328.........easy enough

I get to the depot and my truck is already hooked up to a set of trailers and I have a quick
glance and everything looks fine......... tow these trailers to the next depot north (approx 3.5 hrs)
unhook them,hook up to another set and take then to another depot about 2.5 hrs back
towards my depot........change trailers again and head back home,as I'm parking in the yard
I get a phone call asking what trailers I took north.......I say 327/328 like you told me
I then get told I actually took 387/388!

I feel very stupid,didn't read the numbers correctly and didn't check the paperwork,I took trailers
north that were supposed to be going south !

so now there are delays on both ends of the journey because of me

who hooked up your rig ?

do you drive the same rig or do you just drive different trucks every time ?

I don't know who left it hooked up,either way it's my fault for not looking properly
I generally drive the same truck,Mon to Wed it is shared by 2 of us but it generally
gets used by another driver on the weekends

the 327/328 numbers yes?
they were already hooked up when you arrived
so even though yes it would have been great if you had caught the flub-up
you were not the one who put those on there in first place

so two people phucked up but ultimately it's on you...that what you're saying ?

the trailers were left on from another job,perhaps the driver wasn't told to unhook them,I don't know

so,no the blame lies completely with me

you will get an azz chewing but

he will also know your past work history
I know it means eating lost time and cost
but if he knows you are a hell of a good employee at what you do
then he will take that into consideration when deciding how much of an azz chewin
you are in for

I told the allocator who called last night that it was my fault,I didn't try to hide
it's a huge company so we really don't get to talk with the boss just people further
up the line

Just saw this thread, maybe this will help you feel better...I've worked in OTR transportation companies over the years dispatching, etc. The worst (not the only) story like that I remember is when a dude went from VA to TX, yes, Texas, with the wrong trailer. I think he had to double back and have someone meet him in TN or somewhere along the way, so imagine the expense and headache that guy caused.
Not so bad now, is it, haha.

He should have to wear a pointy dunce cap for a week and each trailer he hauls should have a giant "I'm with stupid" decal on the sides, with an arrow pointing up to the cab.

As I recall (it's been 20+ years), I think it was a West-Coast bound load, so he was probably headed to Southern California. Could have been worse, ALWAYS could have been worse.

I guess like the rent a car comapnies gonna have to have the gate guard or something double check the coming and goings of each trailer to some paper work...... well now you got a story to tell the young'uns.

Sorry to hear but as everyone said, people make mistakes! I'm sure you're a hard worker and companies always want hard workers around even if they do stupid things from time to time. At least that's what I motto my career after
