Why do people count the bar in their bench press total?

Do people not understand that the bar is connected to their hands/arms and thus doesn't weigh anything? Obviously the weights aren't, which is why they are hard to press. The bar, on the other hand, just goes up and down with your body. So why are two plates counted as 225lbs and not 180lbs?

Have you even considered the holes in the plates? Obviously the weight of the bar is included to offset the weight lost by counting a plate as its full mass.
