When should I take a protein shake (and with what)?

Hi, I know this gets asked a lot around here but I've seen many answers and I'm confused. So here's my 43 questions:

-When is the best time to take a protein shake (Gold Standard Whey Protein to be more specific)?
    - I drink milk every morning with some cocoa powder, is it bad to drink milk again right after my workout with the protein shake?
    - I usually only eat after about 30 mins or 1 hour after I finish my workout, is that good or should I shorten the time?
    - I'm 17 years old and weigh about 141lb (64kg), how much daily protein should I take? (I eat lots of beef, chicken, turkey and pasta/rice, don't know if that matters)
Thanks for reading and hope you can help!

    Eat food.
    3-4 well balanced meals daily.
    Train hard.
    Rest.
    Repeat.

That's the only plan you need.

One meal (including a post-workout shake), outside the context of total daily nutrition, is largely irrelevant. What matters is your total daily intake of energy, the macronutrient composition of that energy intake and micronutrient sufficiency.

    1. There is no best time to take a protein shake. Research shows that there may be acute benefits consuming protein at various times (right after your workout), however there is no study done that suggests it is beneficial long term. No harm done in taking a shake right after your workout, however whole idea of having a "anabolic window" is blown out of proportion.

    2. 30 minutes to an hour is fine.

    3. Although the threshold is usually under this figure, 1g/lb of bodyweight is sufficient for both a caloric surplus or deficit. One may adjust his/her protein intake based on various factors such as satiety or caloric restrictions, but it is suggested that anything above that point would have close to no effect on body composition.

No, eating more food would help.
If you're not gaining weight/mass, you're simply not eating enough.

Start asking your parents for a second helping at 2-3 of the meals.

Thanks really organized answers! So me being 141lb, i should take 141g daily right? I heard other people here say I don't need the protein but I eat well (I don't eat all the time but I eat 5 balanced meals a day) and have seen little gains for a year now. Can you give me your opinion on this?

Lol I always have a second helping ^_^ Maybe I should start taking more meals a day (maybe 6 including breakfast?), I just feel like protein powder would be an easier alternative. Are there any negative aspects to taking protein powder? (since I'm still growing it might mess up my growth??). Thanks for answering!

    Do this.
    Get myfitnesspal.
Track your WEIGHT and everything you eat and drink for a week. If you stay around the same, compare your macros/calories. The next week, increase your caloric intake slightly. 200-500 calories. Track everything you eat and your weight the next week or two.

    Still not going up?

    Add more calories.

It's that simple. No supplements needed. That said, if you cannot get adequate protein intake through diet alone, yes look into a protein supplement. However, that said...it isn't that hard to get protein in. Especially if you drink dat dere milk buddy.

Number of meals doesn't matter nearly as much as how large in calories those meals are. Track your chit.

To answer the question, no. Protein powders are and should be treated as just powdered food. Easy calories in the form of a protein dominant source.

Thanks, great answer! I guess my biggest problem is I don't control that calorie intake. To be honest I'm kinda afraid of getting fat sometimes, butif I workout and eat good lean food full of protein I should be fine rihgt? (I know it's a very noob question sry ^_^)
