Was looking at Craigslist today and a guy in LA was selling these...missed them by two days!
They were from Gold's Gym in Venice back in the early 2000's when they replaced their weights.
Sold for $45 a pair, 6 pairs in total!
Kill me now.

That would have been sweet!
Did you hesitate or just see the listing after the sale?"I heard that broken Ivanko revolvers can cure cancer... too bad no ones managed to break one." ProtienandIron
"If you catch the equipment fever, you'll eventually have to have revolvers or vintage York, etc.
Best just to roll heavy out of the gate." Oldschoolifter

So what, do you want them or no? What kind of premium are you talking about here? Also, does anyone know the actual age of them? Are they THAT old or not really? They couldnt have been from the original Gold's gym when Joe Gold owned it right? Everything back then was DD Paramount I think

These are 1980's era plates from Gold's in Venice...nothing that unique about them, other than the Logo and the
fact that they are from Gold's in Venice...but C'mon, how cool is that?
The weights at the original Gold's were BFCO's primarily, all deep dish...much like the plates that were on Muscle Beach
at "The Pit". Joe sold the place in the late 1960's to Bud Danitz and his partner, Dave Sachs, and the gym was purchased in the early
'70's by Ken Sprague...who moved it to Santa Monica in the late '70's and turned the original location at 1006 Pacific
into his personal residence...it's someones house to this day, but the old Gold's sign is on the outside...Last edited by CropDusterMan; 08-29-2014 at 02:46 PM.

Hmmmn yes still cool
The history is awesome, I just bought Arnolds "Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding" because I saw a few pages of the book online and it has so many pictures from back in the day in there of the original Golds gym. Cant wait to get it. Yes you are correct BFCO were shows in a lot of the pictures as well. So cool[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #58 []---[]

That's a neat bit of history. And it's nice to see an appreciation for it. I think the buyer who is flipping them will find that there are far more people on Craigslist that are interested in money than history.
I may be mistaken but I think other Golds locations had the same plates.... or similar. I've also seen some with a rubber edge.[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #32 []---[] ()---() York Barbell Club #43 ()---() ▉---▉ Equipment Crew #50 ▉---▉

Still cool. I have to disagree with the whole trend toward made in China=5hit refrain. While I understand and have sympathy for a few of the arguments regarding prioritizing locally manufactured goods, it seems foolhardy to simply automatically dismiss products made in China. After all, for many, many thousands of years, the quality of things like steel was infinitely higher in China than in anywhere else in the world.

You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Although metallurgy developed spontaneously in many places at about the same time, China has been at it for 3000 years or so and is recognized as one of the leading civilizations in the field.
Where was cast iron invented? China, around 2500 years ago. Anyone who claims to be a fan of cast iron weight plates has China to thank. That a lot of crap is shipped from there now has way more to do with our buying habits rather than their abilities.Last edited by Seatard; 08-29-2014 at 09:16 PM.

Years ago, back in the '90's, I had a U.S speedskater friend who was working with K2 to develop a high end/consumer inline skate.
They went to China, and met with Chinese techs, computer design guys and manufacturing team...it went from concept on paper,
to a finished and testable product (which was about 96% of the eventual production design) in a single day. For those of you in
CAD and manufacturing, that may not be a big deal, but at the time, I was impressed by the immediacy of it all...the one thing the Chinese
have in favor is they are less bound by BS regulations and EPA scheiss, which hamstrings so many U.S manufacturing processes.
It's only a matter of time before we start seeing a major influx of Chinese grown produce on grocery shelves. A few years ago, a Chinese firm
contacted myself and some others to see if we'd be interested in helping train Chinese helicopter and airplane pilots to become aerial applicators
(crop dusters). Apparently, they have focused heavily on future expansion into agricultural exportation...oh boy. The Chinese are currently
designing and building a version of the MD-80 commercial airliner, and they are working closely with the FAA (Federal Aviation Admin) and EASA
(Europe's version of the FAA) so that it will be certified to fly into America and European cities...when it comes to food, anything grown in
the U.S has a paper trail of materials used to grow it, but I doubt they would be interested in adopting the same U.S EPA/USDA standards.Last edited by CropDusterMan; 08-30-2014 at 05:12 AM.

^^^ This
I've got huge problems with china on many fronts (human rights, animal rights...), but they can pretty much build whatever they want at any quality level they want. Unlimited ressources right now. They've built bridges in record time that would shame anything on this side of the ocean. Problem is people demand cheap crap, so that's what they produce and export.▪█──█▪ Equipment Crew #61 ▪█──█▪

Tell you one thing, We didn't demand they put lead paint on kids toys.
Then do it again a few months after they got caught.
No matter what they can do, they don't give a rat's a$$ about you and yours.
If I have a choice, and thank God I still do, I'll buy American every time. And pay the extra."I heard that broken Ivanko revolvers can cure cancer... too bad no ones managed to break one." ProtienandIron
