It depends on which specific features you want to cherry pick. I don't think any Android phones used 64b architecture in 2012. There are people who, mainly because of Windows experience, falsely think that 64b can only be taken advantage of >4GB RAM...but that just a misconception. The graphics rendering capability is pretty much a 2014 thing. The motion coprocessor where all of the sensor processing is offloaded is a pretty novel approach.
Android phones always spec out higher...but iPhones have never really tried to sell themselves based on specs. Most of the time, they don't even mention what the specs are - only how performance has increased.

I don't really think that Apple paves the way, and I don't really think they ever claim to. What they are really good at is pulling in customers and building brand loyalty/image. Elon Musk is another example of that. People want to jump on board with whatever the guy is doing. Start a whole new auto company to compete with the big 3? Sure! Make those cars run on electricity only? Yeah, why not! Build a private space shuttle? No problem! Install solar panels in businesses and residences? All aboard!
