Cropped it,had a look and was pretty happy with the result.Original exposure the moon was about 15% of the screen so the lens picked up the detail very well.Going to set up on the tripod and take some shots of the full rising over the ridge with the Sigma, then will have a play with the camera on the telescope. That takes up 90% of the shot, but no aperture adjustment so have to get the shutter and ISO figured.

Great photos to kick off the camera. I would definitely give it some time before you make another investment. Find out what you enjoy and what your limitations are and go from there.
As far as the numbers. the 55-210 and 16-50 are the focal range.
The numbers that follows the F is the aperture and determines how fast a lens is. Lens aperture is either static or variable. In a variable aperture lens, the first number (3.5) is the biggest aperture towards the lower end of the focal range (the 16 end). As you zoom out, the aperture decreases to 5.6. In other words, as the lens zooms out, the ability to gather light diminishes. Higher quality lens will have a static aperture through out the entire focal range.
Beautiful puppies. Did you just get the camera and do you post process at all?
Great shoot man. I plan on trying to get a shoot of the moon coming over the horizon as well. The moon is at it's largest at the horizon so will fill the frame up better.
Here is my plan/suggestion
. Find high ground. You want to get to a spot very high up so you can get a good horizon shot. With 500mm, in order for the moon to be in focus, you must be focused at infinity. Infinity is far at 500mm and anything within a few hundred feet (or more) will be out of focus.
. Use the sweet spot of the lens (where it is the sharpest), which is f8 -f11. As you increase your f stop, you also increase your field of view. Which means infinity moves closer and you can get more in focus.
. Keep your iso @ 100-400.
. Adjust exposure with shutter speed.
. When on a tripod, use a cable release or remote. If you don't have one, use the 10 second timer. Normally the 2 second timer is enough, but the 500mm is so long, sometimes it may take 3 or 4 seconds to stop wobbling after you hit the shutter.
Excited about the new toys. I can't wait to see what you do.

Very nice mate^^^^
I had planned on going to the city today, but it was hot so we went swimming instead.
I rang them and got them to hold an EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro for me,and will also be getting a remote.Didn't ask if they had remote in stock, but can use the speedlite as a shutter release if they don't.

No worries. Moonrise will be in the golden hour on full moon. So the moon will be coming up just as the sun is going down and getting some color in the sky.

Oh, and if you ever plan on getting something wide angle.... look at the Rokinon 10mm 2.8. It is a manual lens (manual focus and aperture), but a super solid and sharp piece and extremely in expensive.

I'll use it for mainly macro but see what I can capture with it.The Canon goes for around $650,and the Sigma for $750,but it has OS and the Canon has no IS.The Canon L sells for $1100 with IS.
After a bit of research I will definitely be,most likely, probably, getting the Sigma...if they have in stock. But those Canon EF lenses are bloody nice.
Just nice to have a 2.8 in the kit.

I got the camera about two weeks ago. Before I just had a Sony point and shoot. lol It got some fairly decent pics in bright light, but once evening rolled around, I had to bump the ISO so high that every picture was really dirty. This camera allows me to shoot in low light much better even if the ISO is a little higher than normal.
I do some touch up work in Lightroom 5. My dogs coats are very beautiful in person, but it doesn't necessarily translate into pics. I usually use Lightroom to make their coats pop a little more.-!!!---!!!- No Excuses Homemade Equipment Crew #12 -!!!---!!!- Hardnheavy2011

I don't necessarily have anything against Sigma, but one of their lenses that I have is quite soft. It's a 24-70mm f/2.8 for my Nikon. When I mean soft, I mean in focus, but almost portrait soft. I wanted much sharper images since I mainly shoot dog shows. The focus speed is fast, but the images just don't seem sharp enough for my taste even if I touch them up in Lightroom. Honestly, my $190 kit lens has given me much better quality pics at about 1/4 of the price. :/ Any suggestions?

If you don't shoot in raw, start. Try warming the photos up a hair, they seem a bit cold. Keep warming them until the sky looks a natural blue.
Honesty, I love sigma.... but I traded my sigma 24-70 in because it was too soft... which is kind of useless for a landscape focal length. I ended up getting an old Sigma 20-40 2.8 and much sharper, that what those cascades where taken with.
Personally... my suggestion is don't get new. I paid $150 for the above lens which is an 8 yrs old lens that was $1000 when it was new. I think 24-70 is too short for action puppy shots. I think the 70-200 2.8, 50-150 or 24-135 would be much better focal lengths. I have the 70-200 from sigma... old version, and it is very sharp, though a bit soft only wide open.
Nikon, Sigma, Tokina etc have versions of these. Some old, some new. Sometimes I hit jackpot, others times not so much. I traded a few purchases back... just make sure you deal with someone that has a good return policy. Sometimes it's a bit of a treasure hunt. It really comes down to budget and if you are willing to purchase used.
Thanks.
Don't forget your tripod, if you want to capture motion with a long shutter speed. To capture movement, aim for at LEAST 1/3 of a second and 1/2 or more if you can. You may find your photos may be over exposed easily without filters. Cloudy days and in the evening will be your best chance.

[QUOTE=pvsampson;1326896991]Goanna in the yard today.
"Yard"? You have these things crawling around, I'd freak! Lol
I have little lizards but nothing like these.
Great photos of it.I'm open to any suggestions and have a difficult time accepting limitations without an honest effort on my part, you can count on that!

He IS a little lizard.Only around 7ft.
It's been here a few times and I've seen it in the paddock a fair bit,but I hassle it when it comes into the yard as I don't want it to be getting comfortable around the house.Too dangerous for the kids. The shot where he has it's mouth open and hissing at me was when I reached out and touched it on the tail and it didn't like it.

Too many great pics here to repost (the site won't let me and you've seen them all anyhow, right?) so I'm just quoting text. Except for the moon
They are indeed beautiful.
I am stunned by how good this is. I have yet to get moon shots so sharp. And hand-braced on less!
Agreed.
What kind of telescope do you have? I have a Celestron C5 and that sounds about the same as far as image size.
Just beautiful.
Tastes like chicken!
Cool shot! I miss the shore.
Here are a couple of shots from yesterday evening. Was coming up the hill and noticed some kids playing around near the moonrise. Pity I wasn't able to capture a wheelie against the moon.

Really nice shots!! I'm very curious as to your camera settings on those two pics. You seem to have good clarity in low light shooting against a bright subject.....well, sort of bright. I was trying a similar shot recently and I couldn't get it. lol.
Here's a few shots I took yesterday afternoon. The one was "almost" a great shot, but I wasn't quite in the right position and the dog jumped out of the scene. haha

Great shots but especially like the second one.
OK,took some shots of the moon rising over the ridge last night and wanted to have the trees silhouetted but the moon was blown out when I set the exposure.Should I be using HDR to get the moon in focus and not overexposed? The rest of the shots came out excellent, just the ones trying to get the whole scene failed.
