That is an inane question, because first we'd have to agree on what it means to be the "greatest". In terms of titles, it would be Ronnie. In terms of fame, it would be Arnold. In terms of physique, god damn, we'd be kicking a hornet's nest.
Personally, I believe Serge Nubret had the perfect male physique. But this discussion goes nowhere.Weight on the bar, food in your stomach, more of both = more muscle. Don't make this harder than it is. - VikingMan

Let's break this down into categories.
1. Better physique. By ifbb judging standards Ronnie Coleman has the greatest bodybuilding physique to date. Personal preference is irrelevant because then Jeff seid and zyzz can be considered to have top five bodybuilding physique just because a few auzzie kids jack off to them.
2. Achievements/success. Let's start this off by saying movies and politics don't count as they aren't an indication of how good a bodybuilder is. Feats within the sport are all that count here. Creating the Arnold classic doesn't count either, only feats as a competitor. Ronnie won more Mr o titles, and more pro shows. However, Arnold had a higher success rate and retired ridiculously early, he probably could have kept going til 81 at least. However that is wudacudashuda hypothetical nonsense with no proof. If Arnold had stayed maybe Lou would have too and eventually beat him. See where that path takes us? It didn't didn't happen so it doesn't count.
3. Fame/what they've done for the sport. This is irrelevant but I'll address it because it'll be brought up anyway. If an american soccer player played for the national team and popularized the sport in America like no other before him, and became an icon for the sport in America, it doesn't make him the best soccer player in the world. Or if branch Warren became a house hold name and inspired millions to workout, does that make him better than Phil or Kai??
4. Domination within their time. I would say these are the two most dominant bodybuilders ever. Arnold takes the advantage because of how young he was, but then loses it because of how shallow the talent pool was compared to Ronnies competition. This category is a tie.
Ronnie is the undisputed goat. Load your neg cannons

Yeah and that argument could be used for a ton of **** but other than the weiders (who we aren't going to speculate if their the GOAT BBers) Arnold opened up the sport massively. Anyone to argue whos the GOAT as far as their best package on a stage is stupid to say anyone but Ronnie. If this is the thread then it should be locked ASAP because it's a waste of time in that case.

I would say Arnold had some of the greatest genetics ever. And while he is my favourite, I wouldn't say he is the greatest bodybuilder ever because you can only judge these guys against the best of there own era, due to advances in knowledge and drugs. I would however say he is the greatest man to ever bodybuild.

It was his drive and his ability to conquer and make a serious impact in multiple crafts which made me such a fan. His work ethic. To go from Austrian farmboy, to the greatest bodybuilder of your era, to legendary action hero to governor of California is just remarkable in my opinion.
I bought his autobiography to read about his bodybuilding career but it was his work ethic towards life and goals in general I found most admirable.☆☆☆υк ¢яєω☆☆☆

I'll make the argument that if a 2002 Ronnie Coleman stepped on to the 1975 Olympia stage, he would not have placed well. He would have been marked down for being unbalanced or just plain not having a pleasing physique. Judging standards have changed. We like to say that Arnold couldn't compete against modern bodybuilders, but it works both ways.
Bodybuilding isn't just about size; rarely does the biggest guy on stage actually win.

Ronnie Coleman had the greatest physique to date and probably ever, yes I really think no one will achieve what ronnie did no one will ever work hard as he did in bodybuilding and sacrificed everything for 8 titles including his health, the day I saw Ronnie in his prime I started to compare every other bber from past or present with coleman from 99 olympia and still no one beats it and frankly I'm seriously concerned no one will, of course everyone has opinion but this being IFBB section we can all agree that this is true
The way I see Arnold is like a FATHER to bodybuilding almost like he invented it he became the first popular bber he created the arnold era, the great person he simply is so motivational and wise, always followed simple rule of working hard which came from BB, we just respect him a lot for all these things. Not to mention that he was one of the first action heroes we all saw on tv and the first real big movie hero with BB look, Predator one of the classics just because of Arnie he also won the olympia at the time if I'm not mistaken or somewere close to filming the movie
But to say he is the greatest ever would simply be an insult to king of bodybuilding because this is art and it will never ever be seen again and I, You, We.... we all know it, it's just hard to admit that the sport you are following will never get a better player then it already had and you weren't there in it's prime, just like Micheal Jordan in basketball.

Arnold Schwarzenegger: What I've Learned
http://www.esquire.com/features/what...src=syn&magesq
Winner of thirteen international bodybuilding titles. Ubiquitous star of action movies, including The Last Stand, in theaters soon. Leader for eight years in the battle to save California.
You can't learn charisma.
The power of influence is one of the most unique powers that you can have. It's not the power of controlling people. It's developing a certain skill of communicating what you want to accomplish so that people will follow you.
Be a public servant. Not a party servant.
I didn't get it at first. I'll be back. What the **** is I'll? I will be back sounded much stronger in my mind. So I argued with Jim Cameron. And he said, "Look, Arnold, I don't tell you how to act. Please don't tell me how to write." After I saw it in the movie, I was so thankful to Cameron. That was a good lesson to learn. If someone is a good writer, stick to the script.
I would always write down my New Year's resolutions and mark them off the way I mark off sets and reps.
On New Year's Eve, you can just blabber out: I want to lose twenty pounds and I'm gonna read more. But what does that mean? There's too many variables there. If you're really serious about it, then write down when you're gonna lose the twenty pounds by. Is it March 1? Is it June 1? Make a commitment.
The day is twenty-four hours. I sleep six hours. That leaves eighteen hours to do something.
My father was a country police officer. All he knew was discipline, performance, and work — not wasting your time. He came from an era where everything was scarce, so everything had to be useful. That's why he was so against bodybuilding. He saw it as narcissistic. His belief was that you build your muscles by chopping wood or shoveling coal, doing something with your body that benefits someone else. But it was from him that I got my work ethic.
In the early days of immigration, they just shortened the foreign name. They did whatever they wanted with it. But in Hollywood, there was something else: It had to sound cool. You know, John Wayne. That sounded American, powerful. Charles Bronson. Those are great names. But Arnold Schwarzen...ag...ager? Ager? Acner? What is this? No one could pronounce it. So early on, they tried to convince me to turn it into Arnold Strong. But eventually the idea became: If someone has a difficult time remembering your name, they will also have a difficult time forgetting it.
Let me show you how far we've come with our fitness crusade: When I came to the United States in the sixties, no one ever thought that one day every hotel would have a gymnasium. Back then, people thought if you did weights you would get muscle-bound and die of a heart attack or become gay or an idiot. People thought weights would always be in dungeons. Now they're in hospitals. Now even golfers use weights.
When you get older, sex may change a bit. When you're sixty-five, it's not exactly the same as when you were twenty-five. But that doesn't mean it's over. It's never over.
It was one of my early goals to be a millionaire. In the beginning, I wanted to have a gold Rolex, a Rolls-Royce, a cheetah — just stupid things that you think of when you're a kid. Then time goes by. The Rolls-Royce thing went out the window, because when you get to the level where you can afford one, all of a sudden you say, "It's a little bit over the top." A cheetah? I think in California they got rid of the law that says you can have wild animals. Having a cheetah is a stupid idea.
In Europe, everyone is in your way. The government is in your way. The law is in your way. I mean, when my friend and I wanted to go start a bricklaying business here, we went down to city hall and got a business license. No one asked: What kind of school did you go to to learn bricklaying? Do you have any certificates that show you graduated from your trade school? Here, it's go out and make it. Just make sure you pay your taxes.
I always tell my accountant, If you're in doubt about taxes, pay more. No Cayman Island offshore investments. No gimmicks. I love paying my taxes!
Saving money on tips is nonsense. Give 20 or 25 percent. Wise investments are where the action is.
I remember when I went into politics, the legislature wanted to create a blueberry commission. Who's gonna say no to a blueberry commission? Well, I said no. I thought they should fix the budget before they do the ****ing blueberry commission.
Politicians admire the military people who go to Iraq and risk their lives. Well, how about having just 10 percent of that courage?
We must teach the future leaders that political courage is not political suicide.
Peace would solve a lot of problems.
