What's New

Forsaken Masters is the newest expansion. It introduces seven NPCs you can do special quests for, and level up your reputation with them.



They can craft a single new affix onto your gear for you from a list of affixes. If you have an item that's almost badass, but needs one more affix to be good, well now you have a much cheaper and better way of crafting that item, besides using a rare Exalted Orb on it and hoping for something good to happen. They also act as sort of "super vendors", offering things for sale that the regular merchants never will. Rares, uniques, skill gems, maps.


Other New Stuff if You Haven't Played in a Long Time

Sacrifice of the Vaal came out several months ago. It introduced Vaal Orbs that can modify items, possibly making them stronger, possibly turning them into garbage. "Corrupted" side areas where you can find unique monsters with decent drops, which will reward you with either a Vaal Skill Gem or a Vaal Fragment. The fragments are the main point of this expansion: they let you fight a super endboss and her minions, comparable to the Uber bosses in Diablo 2.

And of course Act Three was completed quite a while ago.


Upcoming New Stuff

New skill and support gems are implemented every couple months. Every month brings us a few new Unique items. And the next expansion will arrive in about seven months from now. We're assuming that one will be the glorious Act 4.

The developers intend to expand the game as long as it's profitable to do so, stating they have plans for up to 10 acts. Something that will take them decades to accomplish. Do you remember how you wanted there to never stop being expansions for Diablo 2? The developers sort of feel the same way.


Help For New Players

The skill tree is not as deep as it looks like at first glance. When starting off there's basically only three stats that matter: Increased Damage%, Attack Speed% (called Cast Speed% for spells) and Life%. You pick a skill you want to use, see where its damage source is, and select your starting class based on that. For example, let's look at Flame Totem.



Right underneath its name is its typeline, which is "Fire, Projectile, Totem, Spell, Duration". Any node on the tree that says "increased fire/projectile/totem/spell damage" will effect it equally.

In general, increased attack/cast speed is almost always worth taking if it's 4% or above. Increased Damage% is good if it can average 15% or more per point (such as if you take two 10% increased damage nodes to get to a 30% increased damage node). And life% is pretty much always worth taking. In general it usually isn't worth expanding out except for powerful keystones if you have a lot of these type of nodes open to you: In a real sense every +10 strength/intelligence/dexterity node you're forced to take makes your character that much weaker.

Try to get at least about 140% increased life% on the new tree and your character should do okay in the endgame. Just remember that damage is almost as important: Faster kill speed means faster EXP and more items dropped, which means faster kill speed which means faster EXP and more items dropped. It's like a feedback loop; characters with slow kill speed are miserable to play. Not only that, they're less defensive since they don't stun monsters as often and:

Life Leech

There's no getting around it. The endgame is balanced around you having max life leech. You can recover 20% of your max life per second with leech. Physical attackers can max it out pretty much for free, just have a some gear with a lot of the affix on them. (Mana is the same, but you only need like 2% mana leech.) Spell casters will have to use the Life Leech support gem until they can get the best in slot endgame uniques that let you leech off elemental damage. Or use the new Warlord's Mark.

Resists

You need maximum resist, or at least very close to it. Spells will kill you in one hit by the end of the game if you don't.

Resistance has what we call "accelerating returns", due to how it reduces things. For example, if you have 50% fire resist, that means you halve the damage you take from fire. If you have 75% resist, you halve the damage you take again. Which means the last 25 points of resist you have are as strong as the first 50. Block% acts in the same way.

Most other stats have relative diminishing returns. Going from 300% increased damage to 400% makes your damage multiplier go from 4 to 5, or a mere 25% more damage than what you'd have done with 300%.


Piety's Arrows/Dominus's Fist

These two attacks can be very dangerous to the unaware. They're half elemental, and half physical. Even with max resist they do thousands of points of damage very quickly. The only way to be certain you'll survive a hit from these is to have a lot of Armour, a godton of Energy Shield, use a Granite Flask, or use the skill Immortal Call.

Of course just dodging them works great as well. Just takes longer to finish the fight.


FAQ

Is this Windows only?

Unfortunately, yes. If you're using Linux or an Apple OS, you'll have to use some third party software to trick your PC into playing it. It'll likely never see the light of day on consoles due to their business model.

I messed up my character, is there any way to respec?

For minor screwups you can use respec points, which you get from certain quests and Orbs of Regret. If you need to tear the entire thing down and start over, your options are to make a new character or wait months for the new league. There are free respecs every time they change the skill tree.

Is there still desync?

Of course there's still desync. What do you think this is, some kind of sci-fi utopian universe where it's possible for a game to resync more than once every five seconds? Preposterous!

Yes we've had PvP forever. There are duals, you don't even have to be in the same instance to challenge someone 1v1. There's 3v3. And there are these open PvP arenas where you can just fight people all day.
