Calcium deficient here. Good idea to eat sardines with bones? What about choking?

Don't the bones make you choke? Sounds gross quite frankly...

I mean, we always make sure to remove any bones when we eat fish, big or small, so I can't imagine eating them now and having them stuck in my throat, not an experience ANY human wants to reexperience, I don't think.

Thing is I'm lactose intolerant and don't like ANY forms of milk, be it soy or almond (I like regular almonds for the minimal amount of calcium they give)

So I'd just like some advice concerning nutrition if this is the right place to put it.

    1. Eat bread with them, any little bones that get stuck in your throat (Assuming it happens) will get shifted easy with bread/toast.

    2. Find another source of calcium if you dont want to eat sardines.
    Eat the damn yolk.

How do you know you have a calcium deficiency?

Dairy actually is not the best source of calcium. That is a marketing ploy.
A lot of leafy green vegetables are high in calcium.

The bones are actuallly quite soft. Another option is calcium fortified orange juice.

Sardines are pretty small fish and in my experience, their bones are very small and soft.... far less crunchy than a roasted almond.

Just ignore the dairy and you have a wide variety of calcium rich foods.

The bones in sardines basically dissolve. The canned ones, anyway--just mash them up a bit and you don't even notice the bones.

If you are making fresh sardines, a neat way to cook them is by braising them as the base of a pasta sauce like a puttanesca [instead of anchovies]. They add a lovely complex flavor and the bones will dissolve as above. Red sauce with capers, olives, onion, and sardines---delicious.

You can also supplement calcium citrate. It's not a bad choice. My RD recommended that to me when I was healing from a stress fracture and it's one of the few supps I still take. Just make sure not to take it with caffeine, as that impedes absorption (I take 2 x 500mg with lunch since I have coffee at breakfast).
