seems like op handled the situation well if what he said in the OP was true. criminal on his property, probably to come steal more chit, held him until the cops came, then cops did the rest. the fact he had a gun made it easier and safer for him than punching him or tackling him or whatever. im not some gun activist, but seems like op having one in this situation worked how it should. i think the problem with having such liberal gun laws (compared to other countries) is that the guns end up in the wrong hands, which leads to obvious issues with gun violence etc.

OP is a vet. He would have had absolutely no problem trying to run down and chase after a malnourished, middle-aged and presumably homeless vagrant.

OP went with the safest route during initial contact. Criminal complied and went peacefully. If he tried to resist or escape, I presume the OP would've had no issue using physical force (tackling) to subdue him at that point.
