This thread combines two things I love - powerlifting and demographic studies.
Which state produces strong lifters or is known for power lifting and why? I would think that mid-western or central states with a lot of German and Nordic heritage would naturally produce strong lifters.
Conversely, maybe I'm wrong, but is seems MN isn't exactly churning out world-class power lifters. I googled 'Minnesota Powerlifting' and found some information. Only some. Are certain states known for the sport?

Thanks for the response. Suppose I were interested in learning more about the sport from a demographics perspective. What would a better search have been?
And keep in mind - I don't want this to turn into a race thread. Just wondering if there's a particular state known for powerlifting?Last edited by 4isenough; 08-12-2014 at 03:00 PM.

Texas and Alabama.
I'm in MD, a mediocre state overall. However we have some freaky strong 165's - 198's. There are some incredibly strong lifters in the 275's to SHW but not as many as the 2 I stated and the ones that live here compete in nationals.Lifetime PR's
Squat 445 w/ wraps (405 raw no wraps)
Competition Bench 275
Deadlift 435

I have no clue but I would go with Texas and Illinois. This isn't even really powerlifting related but I just remember when I was in the Corps that Texas and Illinois always seemed to have the most freak athletes. Always exceptions but anytime some kinda challenge thing or pick up game was going down the kids from those two states were puttin it on folks usually. From arm wrestling and wrestling to football to just racing sprints.

Texas and Louisiana. Collegiate powerlifting is huge in both states. Plus, anywhere Ian Bell lives wins.
Agree with Maryland sucking. It's sad. When is the state championship this year? Its been a while since I've done it."Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats."

After seeing a hard workout you may want to complain and want others to pity you for the work you have to do. Your mom will pity you. Your girl will pity you. I may pity you, but your competition will not pity you. They will step on you, walk over you and spit on you. Boris Sheiko

Yea man. I need to come down there and get some deadlifts in with ole Hamburgertrain. I believe the championships are in November again last I heard. But it is going to run too close to the American Open. Id like to do them both. But a month turnover isnt going to cut it.
Meet Lifts
Squat- 837
Bench- 440
Deads- 715
Total-1962
Wilkes- 490

Its in november indeed. I came to states last yr as a spectator and i believe i watched u lift. Correct me if im wrong. After watching the meet i decided to train and compete as well. Only done the equinox open so far and doing states in november @ 198. There doesnt seem to be too much talent coming out of MD considering i feel i have a good chance placing very well after less than 1 yr of powerlifting under my belt.
Edit: altho the kelchaw (sp?) brothers at 165 look like they have really great potential.
