People who sell on ebay need some advice with a buyer

Why an earth would you not double check with the buyer before spending $20 on postage?

The fact that I have a conscience means that I would drop them a message first just to check as I would feel incredibly guilty taking $170 for chit.

I don't think it is...it is from the ad that was linked, but its the kind of thing people post when they are selling guides or boxes.

Well... If this was it, I see the word guide clear as day, And I've seen hundreds of bids similar to this so it's not like OP is the great deceiver. Ultimately it's my responsibility as a buyer to read the ad, price, and terms, and to negotiate any discrepancy.... but as they say...
