Ohio State, in a nationally televised night game, let Virginia Tech walk into their house and beat them. If I recall, that's what happened to OK State a few years ago and they were left out of the title game, allowing Alabama and LSU to rematch.
So does conference champion mean anything or not? Why did Alabama get a title shot without winning the SEC? Then, come around and say TCU/Baylor didn't deserve a shot because they weren't "true" conference champions.
In the end, it came down to money and politics. Alabama, Oregon, FSU, and Ohio State... four of the most storied football schools of all-time with large alumni fan bases across the country... That's really convenient. The rules were tweaked for Alabama and then re-adjusted to allow Ohio State to get in.
The College Football Playoffs has as much legitimacy as the NBE (not NBA), as in National Basketball Entertainment. It lost all its credibility with its 12 member committee. Let me repeat: the fates of national title games are in the hands of 12 people, with their inherit biases (some of whom, currently hold positions at a D1 school).
The 12-member committee is full of old and senile dudes and a woman, who is a "big fan of college football". Do any of these old dudes even stay up past 9pm? I have more credibility (and that's a joke in itself) than the woman because I actually played football and I watched all conference champion games last night. I doubt with her busy schedule, she was able to do this. That's like me going out and deciding a champion for golf or NASCAR, sports I've never played or even understand.
At least, the BCS had a mixture of human polls (with members far greater than 12) and advanced computer metrics and analytics to decide a title game.

It's disheartening that you feel this way but in terms of logistics it is the best opportunity to show case the best. This is coming from a guy who just loves sports.

If you think this is a "playoff" you are a grade A idiot. This is a tournament with an arbitrary number of participants, which was determined before the season even started with NO regard given to how many participants would actually be needed. This is an awful way to determine a champion.
