What's the go-to way to build traffic to a website that is literally brand new? What are the first steps?
I just don't see how posting to ********/Reddit/whatever is going to be a sustainable source of traffic in the long-term. I figure you're only getting a sustainable traffic source unless you have the cash do go into paid advertising... Any perspectives?

This ^^^^
Especially if you have no experience with building websites, learning as you go helps you understand the whole process. Also, loads of designers charge extortionate prices for just setting up the site and making a few minor tweaks as most people don't know how easy it is to actually set up a site. Plenty of good Youtube videos and blog posts to help you on your way."I see you have a chip on your shoulder. Carry it for life and it will weigh you down. I've never used squarespace before so I don't have first hand experience. I've always used WordPress and never had any problems. I've heard all of the benefits of squarespace countless times from listening to podcasts. They pride themselves on ease of use, literally just click and drag to create a site. They also seem to have good support for eCommerce.
Wordpress is much better supported with plugins, themes etc. Squarespace is pricey in comparison. If you're anyway competent with computers then you'll be able to quickly get the hang of Wordpress and plenty of people in this thread (including myself) can give you a hand if you choose to go down that route.
Just my two cents."I see you have a chip on your shoulder. Carry it for life and it will weigh you down. Be like me, a balanced man, with a chip on each shoulder."

Hey guys, I'm gonna buy hosting+domain today. I will probably go with hostgator for the hosting, but I'm wondering if I should buy my domain there as well. It says it's 12.95$ for a year and I'm wondering if it's the best price available. Can anyone tell me if it's a decent price or there are better domain
Also, what tool do you guys use to find good domain names? I've searched for sites that give you the number of daily searches for certain words, but you need to pay to access them. I've tried sites like wordtracker, but they ask for an expensive subscription. Is there any free site to check for a word's search popularity?

I use Squarespace for my photography portfolio. It's easy to use and you can switch to any of their many themes whenever you want. My portfolio is a simple static website so I'd rather have a CMS and hosting that is automatically maintained instead of me having to always update Wordpress, themes, and server configs whenever newer versions or security vulnerabilities appear. It's a zero-maintenance solution.
For my blogs, e-commerce, and other advanced content management needs, I'd rather get regular hosting for more control.?

I found this google sponsored link when searching for GoDaddy domain coupons: https://ca.godaddy.com/deals2/defaul...0701215155%3as
Do you think it's legit? I'm in Canada and the price looks good, it even says that additional years will be 10.99$ per year. Thoughts?"Fighting for peace is like phucking for virginity." -Ronnie Coleman

For normal web hosting, you would be allocated some web space on the company's servers. You would be able to use a browser-based file manager or an FTP program to upload your own files, such as WordPress, to your server to get your site up and running. You would be able to edit those files and/or upload different templates to install. Basically, you manage and edit all your files manually, and that will mean digging into code.
On Squarespace, you sign up for their service and everything is simplified for you. It's like using Twitter or ********. Once you're registered, you fill out your profile, browse a catalog of designs, and select the one you want for your website. Your site is generated with some pre-made sample content and you can basically just click around to change the text and images.?

Are you talking about this thread http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...hp?t=153076311 ? I've read a lot of pages of the previous threads, but I'm still asking about the hosting/domain to make sure it's the same quality now in July 2015.

So a few days ago I lost 70% of my traffic.
I changed the permalink structure of my website and then every outbound link returned a 404 error, because Google did not reindex my site.
So if you found my site on SM, fourms or Google when you clicked the link you would get a 404 error. I used a 302 redirect to solve the problem in the short-term and not to annoy searchers.
What I didn't know was a 302 redirect passes 0 page rank, so 2 days later I lost all my SERPS ranking. Including 1# and 2# rankings on Google for several keywords.
Ending up losing 70% of my traffic and converted nothing.
Took me 3 days to fix my links and for Google to reindex all of my site.
Rankings now back to normal and traffic is back to where it was.
Nearly killed myself.

Yeah, well Google Webmaster Tools has this thing called "Google Fetch", where you can submit each web page and ask Google to reindex it. They said it takes anywhere from a few days to 4 weeks. Luckily they got chit done quick.
On a side note, almost at 100 book sales in the first 3 months, with next to zero external promotion from my website, quite happy with that.Learn how to freelance online @ www.workthai.afarangabroad.com

That's incredible. Seriously. Congrats. All it takes is a fuking niche you know about man I swear.....Half the chit is so fuking easy but you'll never fuking think about it because it's just not what you know about in life...My friend made a few relevant posts in forums over a year ago related to his type of work, where everyone in that career field needs one/uses one daily, those posts have made him $30-60/month since then...to this day. seriously. he maybe did this over 2 days legit over a year ago.
And ofcourse i would never have thought about that, because I dont know anything about that niche/simply had no impact on my life. All it takes is just being knowledgable of random chit and applying that online.
Yeah the fetch as google tool and sitemap submission is legit but use sparringly. obviously in this case it was a great idea so props.
You should def. check out some of the top terms over say the past month, that people are searching to find your site (webmaster tools), and find out which terms have the highest impressions BUT your average positioning/rank for that term is like 9.2 to 18. So in other words, those terms are searched quite a bit (high impressions) but you're on like the second page/very low first page. Then try to target some of those main ones over time. So much easier to boost chit ur already ranking for than completely new chit.
