Prepare your feels. Srs.
Well, when i was 4, my dad bought a trusty XBox. you know, the first, ruggedy, blocky one from 2001. we had tons and tons and tons of fun playing all kinds of games together - until he died, when i was just 6.
i couldnt touch that console for 10 years.
but once i did, i noticed something.
we used to play a racing game, Rally Sports Challenge. actually pretty awesome for the time it came.
and once i started meddling around... i found a ghost..
literaly.
you know, when a time race happens, that the fastest lap so far gets recorded as a ghost driver? yep, you guessed it - his ghost still rolls around the track today.
and so i played and played, and played, untill i was almost able to beat the ghost. until one day i got ahead of it, i surpassed it, and...
i stopped right in front of the finish line, just to ensure i wouldnt delete it.

It's not losing parents that's the really hard part, it's afterwards knowing my safety net in this world, the two people I can always depend on and the comfort of knowing they are out there in the world--people who have my back and know me through and through--are gone. I have no kids and really no family but them. When they die I'm alone in the world, truly.

In 2010 when I was fifteen my mom was diagnosed with cancer and on the 28th of December 2012 she passed away.I knew it was coming but still I don't think you can be prepared they say it gets easier but for me the pain has got much worse .I remember overhearing her on the phone saying the doc said she's not long left hearing that my life shattered in an instant.
10 months after that one of my best friends same age as me and grew up together like brothers got ran over by a truck this really shook me up.
Then March 2014 my girlfriend of a year and a half ends things! This killed me altogether cause she was a major distraction in losing my mom and bestfriend. Now in the space of 14 months I've lost 3 of the most important people in my life. All at the age of 19 some teenage years !
Still I have to be thankfull as there is always worse off then you and life is very cruel you gotta roll with the punches. But I dont think you can ever be prepared for losing a parent you are very close to its the worst experience I've ever felt in my life anyway.

Dad died this February after a 5 year battle with bone cancer so I can tell you that you can't be, and I'm 37. You just have to go through the steps. Last thing was he was unable to shave his face for final family photos so I helped him into the bathroom to shave his face for him. Just a skeleton of the man I grew up with, all state linebacker in high school, went to college on a wrestling scholarship and was now something out of the Holocaust. We had a good talk and then his brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces and grand child all gathered for a few more pictures....6 days later he would be dead.
Cremated him then a few months later so the mid west soil could thaw, drove back up there and with his youngest brother, he and I dug a four foot hole in the thick stubborn soil and laid him to rest in a small cemetery. Very surreal, the whole process.
Be close to your friends and family, hug your kids, don't wait to tell people you love them.
TNACurrently finishing my Master's thesis in History. UPDATE: successfully defended on 10/17/13. PM me any questions on Rome or Second Temple Judaism and I'll try to help. Or anything involving ancient history for that matter....or grad school.
