Yes Stalin, Mao, ect were atheists. But atheism is not a religion ideology. There is no atheist dogma. There are no leaders of atheism. And in fact the only thing that all atheists have income is a lack of a belief. So it is absurd to say that atheism is responsible. Atheism does not posit a certainty that goes do not exist, it merely lacks belief due to lack of evidence.

It is similar to how someone who doesn't believe in Unicorns simply lacks belief in Unicorns due to lack of evidence.

I prefer the term "non-theism" because it coveys the simple lack of belief we enjoy, rather than a possession of one, without the negative connotations that confuse people like the OP.
