    When to switch routines

Its common advice on here for newbies to do a full body program 3x per week. Im just wondering at one point a person should switch to a body part split routine. Im assuming its different for everyone, but whats a reasonable or ballpark amount of time to make the switch?

You wouldn't go from a full body to a body part per day split. You'd go to an upper/lower or push/pull routine.

I'd say stick with the full body routine until you've mastered the big lifts and are no longer progressing at a reasonable pace.

Most people can probably get away with a full body split for 6mths to a year depending how fast you're progressing. There will just come a time when you are lifting some heavy heavy weight and you won't be able to recover and do the same muscle groups two days later. Also it'll become a time issue, that would be a massive workout if I had to bench press, cgbp, ohp, and do rotator cuff work all in one session.
    Current PRs:
    Bench Press: 200x1
    Deads: 315x1
    Back Squats: 275x1

Thanks for the responses. I've been following the simply shredded program since February. It's only a 12 week program, but I had no idea what to do after the 12 weeks were up, so I just kept going with it and tried to increase the weight whenever I could. I wasn't sure if this is ok or counterproductive. but what I'm gathering from the responses is that I could really follow this program for a whole year as long as I'm progressing... right? I was just confused as to what people do once they finish the programs that only last a few months.

I did Simply Shredded as well but it isn't a full body routine otherwise you wouldn't be lifting on consecutive days. I extended the strength portion another four weeks but I'm sure you could do the entire program over again. After that I started the Baby Got Back program which, like simply shredded is another 4x week program.

I really liked Simply Shredded and would do it again. You can follow it for up to a year but personally I would get bored of doing the same lifts. Try doing another 12 weeks of it and see how you feel.

You could do lower body days and upper body days.

just like you do for your full body accept your targeting one area of your body. This means you would be adding more reps and sets so instead 3 of 15 you might be doing 4 sets or 5 sets of 15-20 maybe even more. If your looking for more strength in your lifts you could start out at your heaviest you can manage of 2 sets and then go down for 2 .
Fullbody work outs are a body recomposition type of work out . You do it quickly with few rest periods . I think its fine to switch stuff up just figure out before you get to the gym what exercises your going to do . Sometimes you can do almost a cardio type work out by doing something called super sets . Thats working the same muscle but ding different exercises with out stopping . Its very intense and thats what your going to have to learn how to do throughout your workout to really get those muscles pumping full of blood so they grow!
