I tried the whole back arch thing today... it was incredibly painful for my lower back and possibly made me weaker :/
Is this just some joke perpetuated by youtube?

Man you love making threads. lol. No hate though. You can't just go from not arching to some giant arch in no time. Baby steps...that goes for everything. This may help. BTW it takes years to really get this stuff down.

It makes sense in theory, I can do more weight in a decline bench press than a flat press and i don't have to go as far... but in reality I just found it to be incredibly painful. I didn't try it until i had read about it and watched a few very long detailed videos, followed the steps, and the end result was just pain. I wouldn't recommend this for any reason.

The only reaon to arch your back is to "cheat", in other words to decrease the ROM so that time under tension is reduced. Some lifters got so good at times that they just have to lift the bar for few centimeters. As you can see this is bad for you, since you're not training to win a contest but to trigger muscle growth and hence more time under the tension and more distance you travel the better. Besides the more you arch the more tricep work you do at the expense of your chest.
So arch in a natural way but don't do that powerlifting stuff because it's both useless and detrimental for you as someone training for size and look.
