PowerBlocks any good
Has anyone used PowerBlocks. Do they stand up when dropped and do they put a strain on your wrist. It looks like they would thrash your wrist if you put on too much weight.
Thanks

I was not originally a big fan of them but after seeing them a lot in the local shop I think they are pretty cool for the space challenged and the traveler. They don't roll around and they fit approx 12 sets of dumbells into one space.
The 90lb ones seem to have a space constraint for your hands but it is really a mental thing.
The only time they seem to interfere with me is when I try to do incline rotating curls, otherwise, once you get your grip right, they don't interfere much. You shouldn't be cheating the wrists anyway.
I don't know how they would stand up to being dropped but you shouldn't be dropping the dumbells anyway. I work with up to 120's and a have never dropped one. If you can't put them down in a controlled fashion you've got too much weight. I've seen more injured shoulders from guys dumping the heavys after a flat bench set to know better. Plus, I've seen a 110 bust to hell because it was dropped at just the right angle from just the right distance.
They are pretty expensive compared to plates and changing handle but not compared to fixed sets.
I wouldn't buy a set but I wouldn't disourage anyone who could benefit from the compactness from getting them. I have a buddy who travels a lot and bought the 90's to carry in the trunk with a portable bench for the hotel rooms.
Hope this helped a bit.
Find a place that has them and try them a few times before you buy.

Thank you for your reply. I have looked at other info on the web and in some mags and they look like a good idea if you do not have to room for a individual set.
Thanks

I have a set of powerblocks and they are worth every cent I spent on them. I have the set that goes up to 90lbs per DB and although they are a bit costly, they are very easy for someone like me to adjust the weight(I'm a paraplegic) and it saves lots of time between sets. The weight is very sturdy no matter how much you are lifting so you have total control every time. If you have the money to buy them, I say go for it!

I have used these in different hotels during travel. They arent that bad at all, and clearance for your hands while not great, was not terrible either. Expect things like overhead tricep presses and dumbell pullovers to be difficult to accomplish. They were also a little wobbly intra-plates but perhaps because of their publice environment they were over-used.
Overall they are nice, just very expensive.

Pre-1960s Work Outs FTW!
I swear by them.
I can do everything I do with a normal dumbell with no problem whatsoever.
Expensive? Yes, more expensive than buying a row of 90 pounds dumbells in 5 pound increments? No. I'm talking quality dunmbells here.
They are worth every penny.

DB's are cheaper
Well where I buy my dumbells a set of DB's from 5 to 90 is cheaper than Powerblocks from 5 to 90. You can get a set of CAP hex dumbells from 5 to 90 in 5lb. increments for $427.50 that's .25 per pound as opposed to Powerblocks at $499.00 Yes I know the Powerblocks take up much less room but I'm not pressed for space and I enjoy having the full set of DB's on a rack in my garage/gym. So if you got the space go for the ful set of DB's By the way I got my set of DB's at Muscle Euipment Factory Outlet in Montebello CA. (323) 888-6022

Anyone try the ironmaster adjustable dumbells? They come with the stand 10-85# set for $460 total with shipping. I am thinking about these over the powerblocks.

I also have the 180lb set 90 each and love them, I've had them almost three years and paid at the time over $600 I'm glad to see that they are goin down in price.
I may have to add to them now, I think they can go up to 130lb each?
I would say go for it...
