Recently back in my hometown in wv, a family who were fostering a pit were throwing a tennis ball and letting their 7 year old race the pit to the ball. Which is a huge no no regardless of the dog. Dogs are possessive over toys and things they think they own. Of course the pit bit the boy. The family was charged but if they agreed to surrender the dog to be destroyed, charges would be dropped.

I say let the pit go and send the parents of the boy to jail for being so stupid.

So what? Other dogs will be subject to bad upbringings too. The fact is that one breed attacks and kills more people THAN EVERY OTHER BREED COMBINED. These same websites also state that pit bulls should never be left alone with another dog or animal.16 The practical question is: Why is "pit bull dog aggression" tolerated at all?
Pit bull dog aggression is unacceptable for two reasons. In many instances it leads to human aggression. A common scenario is the following: A loose pit bull attacks a leashed dog being walked by its owner. The owner gets seriously injured trying to stop the attack. Secondly, far too many beloved companion pets and domesticated animals suffer a violent death by the powerful jaws of pit bull terriers each year. In some instances, these attacks involve pit bulls charging through screen doors of private homes -- in a home invasion attack -- to kill the pet living inside.17 Owners of the pet are then forced to watch as their pet is disemboweled by the pit bull and pray that the dog does not turn its attention on an innocent family member next.

Historically, it is believed that dogfighters removed human-aggressive pit bulls from the gene pool. "Man biters," as dogmen referred them, were "culled" to prevent dog handlers from suffering vicious bites. However, dogmen themselves and pedigrees show a different story. As far back as 1909, George Armitage shares a story in, "Thirty Years with Fighting Dogs." He describes Caire's Rowdy as not a mere man-biter, but as a "man-eater," the most dangerous biter of all.6

In 1974, after a series of high profile news articles written by Wayne King and published by the New York Times, the image of the ferocious fighting pit bull moved from the shadowy world of dogmen into the mainstream. I know Garner. He will tell you in a heartbeat not to buy his pits as family dogs because he breeds them from aggressive dogs. However, he has also managed to raise his children around his kennels without a single problem. There are some breeders out there that intentionally breed "game dogs." those are not the entire breed, but a sub culture that has emerged over time. It has been over glorified to the point many people don't even know the reality of the breed.

Know your breeder and know the signs of fight training. That is the easiest way to avoid getting a mutt you wouldn't want. Just like back in the day people had problems with nonsense breeders that were breeding aggressive Dobermans and German Shepherds for guard duty without a clue of how to do it properly. People ended up with dogs they couldn't handle in family situations. For decades we heard about evil GS and DP dogs and how they were genetically predisposed to attack. It is a bunch of bull put out by people masquerading as experts when they know very little.

Every time I see a pit they are pretty much hype as fuk and usually dragging their owner down the street. Also have about 3 or 4 in my neighborhood and their owners won't let them come face to face with my dog bc apparently they don't do well with other dogs. I think they're just too hyper and chit can get srs real quick if they aren't completely submissive.

Not everybody should own a pit. They are stubborn and high energy. If you don't have experience with training dogs or raising dogs a Pit isn't a great choice. Then again neither is a Dalmatian or Chow. Again, owners continue to be the problem.

Over here, if you own a "Dangerous Breed" (pit, argentinian dog, rotweiller, doberman etc...) when you are out in public you need:
- to have the dog on a leash full time
- muzzle on full time
- papers that you don't have a record and that you are mentally sane
- papers that the dog is registered at the city hall
- insurance for the dog

i was attacked by a collie when i was 12. still have the scar on my arm to prove it. attacked me in my sleep.
my sister was bit in the face by a german shepherd when she was 8. she was kissing its nose.
a chihuahua my uncle and aunt had use to bite my dads feet all the time.
also, neighbors when i was a young teen had 2 chows. mean as CHIT.

My grand-mother's Daschund-Pekingese mix had seven confirmed biting incidents. Two of them lead to surgery for the victims. The town never wanted her to put the dog down and nobody rallied against Daschunds. My cousin lost part of his ear when a neighbor's Golden Retriever attacked him. He also received thirty six stitches to sew his face up.

The meanest dog I ever owned was a pure breed Cocker Spaniel. A group of guys tried to dog nap him. When we got home their car was in the middle of the street with all four doors open. The dog was in the car licking blood off the seat when we got there.

So you think it's ok to give a dog a ball. Then throw the ball and have the 7 year old and the dog fight over it? Sounds like rolling the dice. Fortunately I don't have kids so I don't have to worry about it but I tell the neighborhood kids that when he has something and he's laying down & destroying it, don't try and take it from him. He's very possessive.

I would say no more than average. I've got a Pit breeder for a neighbor, two Pit breeders in the family and a cousin that has four Staffies. The neighbor has raised six kids without a single bite. The two breeders in the family have raised kids without a single bite. My cousin's little 3 year old rides his Staffies like ponies and they never get aggressive.

What you must remember with all animals is, they are bred from wild creatures. All dogs are able to attack because they are animals without the same brain function that keeps most humans from attacking each other. Pit Bulls get more attention because they are large powerful animals. However, if you have one like mine it is more likely to hide behind you that confront an aggressive dog.
