From the sounds of it the one that has been identified is going to be charged under the youth offenders legislation. As far as I know usually that only nets a warning or some mandatory prevention courses.

If it gets blown up a bit more and put some pressure on the nsw justice system to really crack down on them.

Went to a fast food joint recently where only the drive-through was open. Three guys walking around who didn't have a car were annoyed the door was closed so they approached the car behind me to order for them and then waited at the end of the drive-through to collect it.

When I collected my order the guy starts talking to me because my window was down. I ignored him but when I'm sitting at the lights maybe 50 feet away he suddenly appears and grabs my arm. "Where's my dinner?" I told him it was the car behind me but he wasn't buying it.

He was a solid dude but I'm thinking face to face he was no threat. That was naive because he was a threat standing at my window while I'm in a cramped position sitting behind the wheel and restrained by a seat belt. Light was still red.

He then became more agitated and shouted "where's my money?" I said "get your f**king hands off me" and then he went full potato. Reached for my throat but got my shirt instead and started throwing haymakers at my head through the window while trying to pull me closer. I evaded all of the blows and then hit the gas and he fell off the car.

I'll admit I wasn't happy about it and considered pulling over and walking over there. That however would have been reckless because there were 3 of them and only one of me. More importantly since what he did to me was out of CCTV range I would have also looked like the person initiating it and could have easily been arrested. Instead I reported it for the benefit of anyone else in the area they might harass, drove home and ate my dinner.

Now it's easy to think you could try and fight back while you're sitting behind the wheel but I knew if he got my arm outside the vehicle he had a huge leverage advantage and could try and snap it. List goes on. In the end I drove away unscathed.
