The "debate" started due to a basic misunderstanding concerning the role of a reporter, and why he was put on leave in the first place. It then degraded into a discussion about cause and affect, whereby people look at some numbers, and pick out the ones which support their position.
Through it all, some names were called, some trolls did some trolling, etc...
Basically, it was no different than most threads on the internet.If you poke a bear in the eye, expect a bear like response.
