So I finally realised the small whip-type scars I have on my shoulders pretty frequently are probably the result of squats.
I am very comfortable squatting with just the bar, I don't use a towel or any of the other things they have to make it easier in the neck.
The scars always go away after a few days, but seeing how I'm getting more active in the gym, I might actually do squats once every 3/4 days soon.
The scars don't hurt, they just look painful.
I'm not sure whether to use a towel or some other solution at the risk of being a lot less comfortable during my squats, or just to let them be.
Does anyone have experience with this, what did you do?
Edit: Seeing all the mean and sarcastic replies, I'm assuming you think I'm talking about something small.
Let me make clear that my shoulder looks really injured, and anyone seeing it asks me if I'm okay and tells me to go see a doctor. It's all the way across the shoulder, several red blood stripes. I think what I said earlier, small whip-type scars, describes it the best.

I've got the scars and they're permanent. It's a mark of manliness. When you walk around in a tanktop make sure to highlight the broken skin. The only thing great enough to honor your iron tattoo is a bending barbell. Some studies even suggest that once the scars are permanent your testosterone exceeds that of a silver back gorillas. If you wandered into an african jungle all of the animals would hail you as king.

i have pretty rough skin where its at on me despite using a hoodie when i squat (not "im in my own zone and nobody can see me" crap) since i have fairly soft skin. Its a lot worse than it actually looks.
You really need to get a pumice stone and lightly sand it right after or during a shower, really need someone to get the area if its too low to reach or see before it builds up way too much. Mine bleed and go through phases but it never heals because i squat 3x a week, its too far to sand down but it works.
try using chalk on the bar, but its messy on clothes, it just increases the coefficient of friction against the surface its set into. I would honestly probably just use a towel or a hoodie as those pads can cause shoulder injury, not that they dont look ridiculous as it is.
I dont use lotion but like the person above said, do it, its smart to.Last edited by Serpentarius; 07-15-2014 at 04:58 PM.
There is always someone less fortunate, with real hunger, with real adversity, who made something of themselves. What is your excuse?

I have that bar "tattoo" across my upper traps and rear delts from so much squatting....but my skin bruises very easily. I think it's permanent by now.
If you want to avoid it while it's starting, try cocoa butter. I should have.
I'm sure if a serious weight lifter or gym goer walks behind me when I'm in a tank top out and about, they'd silently chuckle because they know what it is...

My wife loves it. She also likes the marks I have from dead lifts on my shins. I wouldn't worry about it. I think scarring adds character to your body and if nothing else gives you stories to tell. I'm not too conscious about what others think when they look at me, except my wife..

Just giving you a lil crap, plus I thought you were complaining about the red print or possible slight bruising the bar leaves behind.. I didn't know it got worse than that and actually scarred til seeing the pic..
If its that bad, the towel isn't a horrible idea.. personally Id just avoid any of the thick rolls as the weight feels less stable..

We might have some at home, I'll try that thanks!
I've seen some people wear hoodies in the gym, but never actually considered it.. doesn't it get really hot, especially this time of the year? I always wear t-shirts.
Thanks for all your tips!
Thanks and lol
Fair enough, I just hate to see my mom worried.
Yeah that's why I don't use them. Thanks.

Stop squatting in tank tops if it bothers you, and we're insulting you because you sound like a wimp.

Just use a pad.
People act like it's such a big deal and you're automatically some kind of giant bleeding vagina for putting a pad on your squat bar, but who the hell cares? A 500 lb squat with a pad is a lot more butch than a 225 lb squat with the bar tearing into your skin for more hardcore points.
I use a pad because my goal is to get strong and I don't give a rat's ass about idiot crossfit logic about a more painful workout magically being more beneficial.
"HAHAHA he used a PAD, what a bitch!"
...said nobody ever.

How do people feel about the plastic rubber/plastic neck brace thingies?? Do they negatively affect squat performance at all?
Also, ya I know what you mean OP...the worst is when I wear a tank top to the gym, forgetting it's squat day..I used to always feel bruises on my back and I'd be like wtf is that from, then eventually i realized haha

Yeah, I think you're right. My doctor also advices me to keep my shoulders bleeding because I shouldn't look like a wimp towards some random guy on the internet who didn't even read my topic. Thanks!
Haha I see :P Why do you even own hoodies in such a hot place? Did you buy it especially for squatting?
Yeah, I really don't care about what people think in the gym, or on this forum for that matter. My worry is that it would be really uncomfortable, those pads look like they might make the barbell roll. Thanks for the advice, I don't know if the pad in my gym is wide enough for my shoulders, I think it's just meant to protect the neck, but maybe there's 2 of them.
Haha one day... one day..
