My younger brother got too drunk (I wasn't there), and he was puking blood all over the place... his friend's mother drove him to the hospital where he had to stay there overnight. I just got the bill last night, and it was $8000... He did some tests, IV fluids, and an X-ray...
Obviously, it's my brother who I should be mad at for being so selfish and stupid to put him in a position like that, making my parents pay almost two months worth of working for nothing. But does this sound right? What the heck... $8000 for an overnight stay? We don't have any insurance... but he applied for the Obamacare stuff about three months ago, and my dad says that we can retroactively apply it (according to what the representative told him).
What's ****in pissing me off is that he's unemployed and is going around telling friends and family about it as if it's some badge of honor as to how wasted he got... trying to gain sympathy and draw attention to himself.

Yea that seems about right, it wouldn't have been that surprising if it was 2x as much. Medical providers jack up rates for uninsured patients. I got a bill for a blood test recently where the base cost was ~1500 and the negotiated rate from my insurance was ~500. If you call the hospital they maybe willing to lower the bill.
the whole thing is useful, but option 4 is relevant to what I said above

and yeah pepper your wallet if you go to the emergency room"I bet your parents taught you that you mean something, that you're here for a reason. My parents taught me a different lesson, dying in the gutter for no reason at all... They taught me the world only makes sense if you force it to."

I don't mind paying all of these taxes... taking almost a 1/3 of what I work for, but at least have some form of free health care and higher education system.... all of these taxes that I've paid... I could have used to put into savings in case something like this happens/if I lose my job, instead of giving it to the government, who won't even bail me out in these situations... so what's the point?

You don't go to an emergency room unless you are going to die.

Our tax and healthcare system us fked man. It's all a scam. In our defense though, I will say that I've been to Canada many many times and;
brb free healthcare
brb higher taxes
brb 25 dollars for a 12 pack of budlight
brb 11$ for the cheapest pack of cigs they make
brb everything, everywhere you go seems insanely priced and you're not even in a nice city (windsor)
it all balances out

not hard to believe the bill. I woke up one night with a swollen throat, went to ER..... Dr. comes in, feels throat "yep its swollen", writes me an Rx and im out the door....... $1050...... had insurance thankfully..
He should take responsibility however and get a job and pay on that debt himself. Very selfish if he makes your parents pay that all.
