2x2 power rack + 2x3 mount add on

Building a home gym, (some of you probably saw my Barbell thread) and I have decided upon the TDS Power Rack seen here:
    http://www.amazon.com/TDS-C-92560-B-...ds=power++cage

I would also like to get a reverse hyper and found a cheaper one that mounts into a power rack, (cheaper because of this) but it has 2x3 mounts, while the power rack has 2x2.
    http://www.roguefitness.com/rh-2i-rogue-hyper-2x3-mount

Is there a way to make this work or do I need to find a different reverse hyper? Or maybe someone could point me towards a better power rack in the same price range that supports the Reverse Hyper?

You could look into the Titan HD power rack- a hand full of people here recently purchased it. It's just a Rogue R-3 clone, so it will work with the attachment. $399 shipped.

Here you go http://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-r-3-power-rack I know nothing about these reverse hypers but I think you'd want a bolted down or weighted down rack to mount it on, plus would it not get in the way of benching?

Sorry didn't see the first response, probably your cheapest bet.

Thank you, price will actually be the same because I won't need a weight tree anymore. Will look into that.

Yeah it would definitely get in the way of benching and I am going to bolt the rack down. I think I am going to have to take the Reverse Hyper off/put it back on whenever I use it/finish using it. A pain but worth the $200 I save from buying one that mounts into the rack.

That's what I always thought. I was told it folds up somewhat, but that makes it still in the way for any bench/squat movement. It seems like an incredibly pain in the butt to have to bolt/un-bolt that thing to use the rack. Seems better to just spend $200 more and get a standalone reverse hyper if you want/need one. On the secondary market, I'm sure you could sell your standalone reverse hyper pretty quickly to almost anyone who knew what it was - to sell the rack-mounted one, you'd need to find someone with the same rack post size (2x3) and dimensions to fit it.

That's a good point.. The house is still being built so its difficult to picture all this with just the dimensions. I don't want to take up too much space in the garage, so I thought the rack mounted hyper would help save space as well as money but you have a valid point about resale.

While my secondary market point is still valid, I forgot that you can order the 4pack of linchpins for $31. That way, you don't have bolt/unbolt.

Completely missed that, thank you for pointing that out.

    EDIT-

    cmarti063,
since this is a r-3 clone, all Rogue attachments that would fit the R-3 should work with the Titan, correct?

the way I understand it is meant to really be mounted on 3 post racks and when it folds down it is only connected to the weight storage uprights so it should be clear of the bench/squat zone. Now if your bench requires to be really far back for incline it might interfer.

I would imagine so. I don't personally own this rack, but that would be the logical conclusion.

The bench I am getting is the Ironmaster SuperBench, based off all the recommendations for it I have found on this site. However, if it does get in the way I will simply take it off the rack when I am using the rack to bench/squat.

2 post. see how this rack has a third upright on each side for weight storage:

You would mount the reverse hyper to that third upright with the weight storage and then it would be out of the squatting and benching area of the rack

I don't think the Titan has the holes on the sides of the uprights that the newer Rogues do for this attachment. It might work, but I think you'll need to drill the holes to mount it. It looks like Titan is 42" inside while Rogue is 43"... so I say no dice on the fit either.

Also, I think at 5'9 (I'm the same height)the Ironmaster bench is poor choice. It is too tall. You'll want something in the 17-18" tall range, even if you continue to grow a few inches.

You would mount the reverse hyper to that third upright with the weight storage and then it would be out of the squatting and benching area of the rack
Might need to find a diff power rack.

Also, I think at 5'9 (I'm the same height)the Ironmaster bench is poor choice. It is too tall. You'll want something in the 17-18" tall range, even if you continue to grow a few inches.
Looks like I might be looking for a new power rack with 3 post and side mounts. What would you recommend for benches? I am 'supposed' to make it to 6'1+ but who knows.

If I were you, I'd focus on getting the best rack on budget allowed, then worry about a reverse hyper.

Don't get me wrong, I love the hyper, and use one regularly at my gym, but the rack is the centerpiece of a home gym. The hyper is an awesome accessory, but it's not a total necessity. You could get by without it, for the time being, in the name of getting a better rack.

You could also go the home-made route for the hyper: http://tnation.t-nation.com/free_onl...the_power_rack
This design is much better compromise, IMO. You could mount it to any rack you want, store it easily (lean it up against a wall or something) and it's way, way cheaper. Hell, you and your dad could build it together or something.

EDIT: If you're dead-set on getting the Rogue hyper, though, I'd just get a stand-alone. If you're gonna shell out $600+shipping for a hyper, you might as well kick in the extra $200 and get the stand-alone.

There's a company called Edge Fitness Systems that makes a reverse hyper/GHR in one, which is also something to consider.

Don't buy an aluminum technique bar, just get a regular 20 kg bar. You will be able to learn on a regular bar without issue unless you are a female or an atrophied weakling. Seriously.

I would make a suggestion to get a GHD that you can just do banded reverse hypers on. That saves a whole lot of cash on auxiliary equipment. Think about it like this- the heart of your gym, the power rack, is currently a $400 budget item, and you want to spend about $1400 on a GHD and a reverse hyper... that doesn't make a lot of sense. I'd get this GHD: www.getrxd.com/index.php/ghd.html and either skip the reverse hyper or get this fabricated:
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...hp?t=128923201 then use all the money you save to get a real weightlifting bar and some bumpers, and build a platform to mount your rack to. Anything left over just send to me.

My budget is around $1500 for the time being, the Reverse Hyper and GHD would be added at a different time. I have pretty bad Degenerative Discs already @ 14 (got a CT scan) so I was looking into the RH more for that purpose rather than just a back strengthening tool. I will definitely look into what you said. Thank you very much for that.

Definitely see what you mean about spending money on the power rack. I have about a $1500 budget for now, and am going to add the RH and GHD at a later date. The OLY lifting isn't happening for a while so I thought the technique bar would be a cheap way to learn the lifts in the meantime, but I won't now. I am going to go back and pick a rack first, and see where I stand budget wise.

With that budget in mind, I am open to any suggestions.

EDIT- I can spend $700 on a power rack, semi-negotiable as long as there isn't $300 shipping. Any suggestions?

I would rather spend the money on a great bar (or four), bench, and a GHD with an adequate rack, then put a lot of money into a great rack and compromise in the other areas.

As such - the racks on this page are right around your price range with free shipping:
    http://www.fitnessfactoryoutlet.com/...s/Power-Racks/

Specifically on that page, the Powertech and York cages. You can add a lat attachment to each as well.

Again though - if I was 14, I'd but a 300lbs weight set and a decent bar - there is A LOT you can do with that. And save the rest for a car. Seriously - I spend at most 2hrs a day in the gym. I definitely spent more than that on average in my car as a teenager.

I'm partial to the Rogue racks. You can accessorize the crap out of them, shipping is reasonable (I was getting $120 to ship a Rogue rack versus $250 to $300 for EliteFTS), prices are pretty competitive and they usually ship their stuff in a day or two. Unfortunately, they don't have sales except for Black Friday. I got my R3 for $70 off and it was 5 items ship for $5.
