Picked MMA because there was no wrestling choice.

Wrestlers and Gymnasts are the best athletes over all. LO-phucken-L at the idea that american football produces the best overall athletes. They are literally just big explosive steroid cows.

    Ideal athlete would have:

    Speed
    Stamina/endurace
    Muscle mass
    Muscle tone
    Height

American Footballers don't have the endurance. I'd go for rugby/aussie rules football or something.

The "NFL players don't have the endurance" is the most ridiculous stereotype idiots like to perpetuate.

Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Vernon Davis, and many others are in ten times better shape than ANY soccer and rugby player.

legit LOL @ people who try to take a stab at linemen

brb running 40 yards in 4.92 seconds
    brb 6'5
    brb bench 225lbs 32 times
    brb 28.5 inch vertical
    brb 330lbs

Can a 330lb soccer/hockey/baseball player or mma fighter run that fast? Jump that high? Push that much weight?

How do you define the "best" athlete though? Each sports trains for different things, how can we compare them all equally

    Most of you are retards

Each sport produces different types of athletes and bodies that can do different things

A cyclist can cycle extreme distances however couldn't run even half of that and the same goes for marathon runners

And you also need an exact criteria for "overall athlete" before you make this stupid thread

The fact that linesmen are fat doesn't mean they're bad athletes.
BRB Clowney ... 120kg, 4.53 40 yards, 21 reps on bench, a ridiculous 38 inch vertical. To put that into perspective cristiano ronaldo has a 30 inch vert. http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/03/cris...do-jump-height

    1. power
    2. absolute strength
    3. relative strength
    4. developed oxidative system, lactic, and ATP-CP
    5. coordination
    6. agility
    7. mobility
    8. speed
    9. mental strength

decathlon has the greatest combined total of all these demands. proper sprinting mechanics requires more coordination than most sports, and pole vault, high jump, long jump, hurdles, javelin, discus, shotput all have great technique requirements. these events are all power events so the greater the power, the better decathlon score you will get. running a decent time in the 1500m and 400m requires developed oxidative and anaerobic systems, and 100m is a good test for speed. all of the events require much greater mobility than is required in sports like football - just think about hurdling over 42" hurdles with very good form, and then the javelin requires a great amount of shoulder external rotation.

I'm a boxer and voted MMA.

Depends on what you mean athlete, if you mean athleticism as in how explosive, fast twitch fibre muscles someone has, then maybe its American Football. However if you mean overall athlete, that means qualities required to be successful in all sports, it's probably MMA, its the closest thing to crossfits 10 points of fitness. Endurance, strength, power, stamina, mental strength, speed, balance, agility, explosiveness, reflexes, flexibility, skill are all required. It doesn't lack in any department for what is required in the sport.
