So.. first day training legs/squatting in probably ~ 2 weeks.

I was so glad that I could do them pain free!

Wanted to keep things easy today.. felt like I was walking on egg shells throughout these sets. But thankfully, my knee felt fine.
Intentionally had my grip extra wide, due to some left shoulder pain.

So, I lifted at a commercial gym yesterday. It's right by my work and a five-minute walk. If I go there, I'll save 60 minutes in my day because I won't have to walk to my gym (no buses go there directly). I will honestly sacrifice one hour of my day walking, even when it's winter, to continue going to my current gym. Commercial gyms are awful. BRB waiting 10 years for every single piece of equipment. BRB no chalk. Only nice part was that I was by far the strongest person there (even though there were some huge guys). Feels good, man. But that's another reason I don't want to lift at a commercial gym. My current one has a bunch of big guys who DL over 500 and bench 315 for reps. Keeps my motivated.

Still tempted to move to the commercial gym. I'll miss my DL jack, platform, bands, chains, and boards.

Speaking of boards, I've realized 1-board press for bench = AMAZING. Never realized until this cycle of Sheiko that has a 1-board press as a big part of it.

I'm sure as I get this better technique down and my deads move closer to a typical ratio with the squat I'll be a lot closer to failure on my grip and will have to make harder choices on how to proceed with rep work.
You don't need your grip to fail for it to be the limiting factor, which in turn will slow everything else down, but, ultimately, your choice, mang.
“Go back?" he thought. "No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!" So up he got, and trotted along with his little sword held in front of him and one hand feeling the wall, and his heart all of a patter and a pitter.”

Not that you need anymore opinions on this matter at this point. But what I noticed with grip without chalk was that what I thought was good grip, wasn't good grip at all and that it was effecting my over all confidence in the set. Once I started using chalk and grip felt stronger, sets just went easier.

Just grab a chalk ball from one of those climbing gyms and walk around with it in some tupperware. That's what I do at 24.

I saw all the rumbler rollers and sweet equipment they hide there.

I have started using chalk. It's been really helpful, especially since the knurling on the barbell at my work gym is some of the most useless ever.

Yea wouldn't want to be lifting there. I checked it out once, but only spent a few minutes. That's where all of my non-lifting friends went... the ones that thought 20min on the tredmill plus a couple dumbbell curls justified excessive drinking and a crappy diet

I thought you were going to say The Athletic Club, which some people swear by, but honestly I think it's pretty shtty... locked away in a basement with old, worn out equipment, half of which was broken when I went

lmao thats hilarious... would be great if you come from a separate area, do that, then walk away... so onlookers think you two don't actually know each other

People probably think I'm weird because my gym only has a few olympic barbells so I go up and feel each one that's free and take the one with the best knurling (some are more worn down than others)... I find it makes a difference even though I use chalk no matter what

When I was at a commercial gym, liquid chalk. Pretty nice that it was mess-free, but I have the sweatiest hands of all time, so I had to re-apply often.

I haven't been there, but it's just out of my way. If I end up transferring, it would have to be to this one downtown. I'm going there one more time for a big squat/bench workout, so we'll see how it goes. Gotta love Sheiko CMS.

Here's my 315 squat attempt from Monday. It came after 3x5@275 and a previous attempt at 315 that was about an inch higher than this one because I was not comfortable with the weight. Front angles aren't really the best, I know, but any criticism is welcome.

i bought chalk when i got my CAP barbell. it's crazy how much of a different a proper knurl makes for grip, also the finish isn't chrome and the diameter is smaller (not a problem, i'd imagine, for someone who's almost as tall as a barbell is long). i don't even use my chalk.

basically what i'm saying is to BYOBarbell when you exercise and you won't need chalk.

Honestly I've only ever done like 7 squat reps belted lol

I probably can use the belt a lot better but I'm still playing around with wearing it higher or lower and expanding maximally into it vs. bracing without a belt.

All I know is it felt really fking tight.

First time deadlifting in a while today. Switched to conventional (since sumo aggravates my quad)

Felt so heavy for 3 plates smh

Can't wait to start pulling sumo again.

Thanks, gonna keep this in mind on my next squat session. I'm sure I could probably stay tighter as I finish the walkout.

One problem is that you have too many steps. When you walkout, your lead leg (whatever it may be) should step back and be set for the width you want. When you take the other leg back, it'll set you up with the exact width you want. The extra steps is wasted energy. Some examples of good setups, imo:

“Go back?" he thought. "No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!" So up he got, and trotted along with his little sword held in front of him and one hand feeling the wall, and his heart all of a patter and a pitter.”

^^^ I'm only taking two actual steps... the third "step" is me turning my foot outward more because it was not flared enough (yeah, I didn't realize until after I filmed that my feet weren't visible). Normally that third move isn't there.

This was only the second single I'd ever done, so I'm chalking that up to not being comfortable with the weight on my back. I may incorporate some more supramaximal walkouts leading up to new PR single attempts so stuff like this doesn't happen again.

Obv a form you're not used to won't feel as natural ipso facto the weight feels heavier. But reps looks really solid if that's any consolation!

I re-watched the unstrong's vid and I can't identify any queues to suggestion he lost tightness. What made you think that?

Interesting. I kind of feel like the 3rd video violates exactly what you said though. It looks like he adjusts his stance width with an extra step or two. That said, he does have a hella wide stance.

I'm not sure if this is what he was referring to... and I know that it by no means = poor form... but in my opinion, he looks a little bit unsteady while walking back right after the unrack; right leg looks a bit unstable at the bottom of the squat, and looks a bit 'wobbly' (for lack of better words) on the way up.

I know that's pin pointing specifics that aren't really substantial, but the combination of those minute things is what made me personally think he could have been 'tighter' throughout.

I still think it's a pretty good walkout, but his steps are a lot tighter, I guess you could say. Unstrong's walkout felt a little lax. cls91 did a pretty decent job of explaining it. Either way, it was just an example of that not everyone is the same.

    Thanks for everyone's input.

I actually think that I might be able to get away with taking smaller steps, which should lead to better stability. I blame being 6'7" (not srs).

Happens to the best of us. The first time you hit heavy singles its so joyful. Then you realize you can't be doing this all the time lol

    that's not what Voldemort says

    /troll

EDIT: So it usually takes a few sessions for my left knee to feel as warmed up as my knee. Is that what knee sleeves are for?

When my knees aren't warmed up it's like this sensation that they are creaky or have stuff in the join. Sorry, not sure how else to describe that.
