For a while I switched from like a 15 degree angle from the floor to a near 45 degree angle (sat back more). This has now given me a glute tear and a weird strain of the right hip socket that I can't identify. So I went back to the minimal angle, since sitting back that much puts my posterior chain in a precarious position with weight I can typically rep 6 times without issue.
What's the right way? I don't want to wreck my back either by being almost parallel, but after returning to this my back actually feels better in spite of the load. Not actually parallel, but maybe 15 degrees tops.

Sounds like you are mixing Stiff Leg Deadlifts and Standard Deadlifts. Def check the sticky and maybe the Liftrite article http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/liftrite1.htm (with video)
