My patient passed away today

I dont know why I'm posting here ... Just wanted to vent I guess..

I was working the night shift and today I went to check on her at 6:00am and she was fine. But at 6:30 when I came back, the room had a weird smell. The smell of death. First time I've ever experienced this smell. I've heard people talk about it but never experienced it myself.

I knew she passed on even before checking vital signs

Called 911 .. But we have a "do not resuscitate order" for her so there was nothing they could do :-/

I've been working with her for 5 years. She was 94 years old and pretty much in a vegetable state so family was expecting this for awhile.

Edit: I'm already home and I can smell it on me, maybe I'm going crazy. I'm going to take a shower, I feel like throwing up.

Corpses don't start smelling 30 mins after they die... it's when they start rotting.

Like the body starts rotting instantly?
Because in the most extreme case, all you'd smell is the feces from the empty bowels and i doubt that even happens within 30 minutes.

Yeah I think relief is what the family is going to feel. Her husband passed away last year and she was never the same after. They were together for 72 years
