Strong lack of comprehension on your part....
you can have muscle and still be fat. In fact there are some pretty fat people at my gym who also have a chit-ton of muscle and are strong. They're not fit by any means, but they do have muscle. According to a BMI, they'd be morbidly obese, but according to bodyfat percentage they're probably just "fat" if that makes any sense.

Average weight of a guy in NC would be highish as its one of the fattest states. Which would grant a little assistance to the bench. In somewhere like Maine it would be a little lower, and somewhere like Japan, it would be way lower.
Odd how they tried to find out the strength of the average man by testing in gyms though, where most people don't go. Also, they only tested people that agreed to attempt to bench 225. Also, many people that couldn't do it, wouldn't, meaning the NC male gym goer who can bench 225 would be even less than 11%.'People are gonna remember me as a god forever... Until they stop using BMI as the calculator for obesity, I will take those figures with a grain of salt. With power of observations from traveling around the world, I would the United States has the largest amount of Fit people in the world, and also the fattest as well. Seems to be a very small majority are in the middle.

This blows my mind
I tore my rotator cuff and let it heal and don't touch barbell bench now (only dumbbells) but I know I could come in cold and rep out 225
I have to question if these people actually lift or if they are those people you see on the stairmaster whos bodies never change followed by a full body workout at weights a small child could move.

I hadn't considered this, but it's a really good point. There would have to be some significant upward bias in the number due to this. If you walk into a weight room with 13 dudes milling around and ask all 13 of them to try to bench 225, at least some of them are bound to decline the challenge because they know that they obviously can't do it.
So if only 9 out of the 13 even volunteered, and then only 1 of those 9 could actually do it, you'd get the 11% found in the study. But that would completely leave out the 4 other guys who didn't even have a hope of doing it, making the true percentage much lower, even while still only considering men who use the gym.
