Was just reading this in the February 2014 issue FlexMagazine.
CliffsRecently, a North Carolina couple decided to a self-inquired experiment to determine just exactly how much the average American can bench press. The results were conducted randomly, by asking gymgoers in approximately 18 regional gyms to perform a bench press 225 pounds for one repetition. To be considered for correctly benching, the subject must touch the bar to the chest and re-rack the weight without any spotter or assistance. Those who could not perform once successful repetition were added to the error pool. After the four month experiment and 2,453 test subjects later, the results were calculated. Out of the 2,453 a massive 2,171 could not correctly bench 225 pounds or used a spotter. Leaving 282 subjects who could correctly bench the 225 pounds. Of course, there are always errors with experiments but it just goes to show it takes time to earn that club membership into 225.
-couple got together and did experiment
-randomly asked people to bench 225lbs
-spent 4 months doing this
-2453 people attempted
-282 could actually do it
-2171 could not do it
-11.4% statistical could actually do it
-of course its experimental and objective, but cheezits das it mane

11.4% of gymgoers, you mean.
the percentage of non-gym-goers who can bench 225 is gonna be much lower, so the real percentage is probably tiny*says 'negged' but doesnt actually neg crew*

It is actually quite rare to see someone repping 225, also show that 99% of people that go to the gym just go to the gym.
The don't train.

Sound way too high
Bet it wasn't a random sample of gym goersA young bull and an old bull were standing atop a hill looking at a bunch of heifers in a field below.
The young bull says "Let's run down this hill and fuk one of those heifers."
The old bull replies "No. Let's walk down there, and fuk them all."

he's weak at everything, i seriously dont understand how he's so weak, he can barely squat 132lbs for a few reps but weighs 200lbs, I'm 100% srs. He isn't really aesthetic and is like 20% bodyfat but honestly he's much weaker than he looks. He can atleast deadlift 3 plates though (not that impressiv but meh)
mirin strength stats in sig btw
lol fukin hell

Finally benched 225 for the first time last week!
Got 3 clean reps. This week, I got 2 solid reps and a third one with a little assistance. I have no real drive to bench any heavier (though obviously, I will eventually go heavier with time simply because my strength is gonna increase). One more week o strength training, then back to my usual hypertrophy style training. Normally I do some heavy sets, some moderate sets, and some light sets.

it's strange..
been lifting roughly 2 years now and i'm pulling 455 and squatting 335 but i doubt i could even get 225 off my chest. i mean i'm clearly not doing the kind of tricep/chest accessories that your typical curlbrah is doing but i have enough trouble with 185.. i just fatigue so quickly with push exercises i can't seem to make any progress. meanwhile i literally cannot fatigue myself out of squatting even with ridiculous volume..
genetics? idk

I used to be able to bench 245x3 when I weighed more. But I don't bench press anymore at all and my gains have been through the roof. My chest is the fullest its ever been.
I only do 9 sets for chest:
Incline DB press 3x5-10
Hammer Strength Decline Press 3x8-12 (THIS MACHINE IS THE BEST THING EVER INVENTED)
Cable Flyes 3x10-15

Not to brag but I first benched 225 at 15 years old lifting for high school football... OK, full brag...
Almost a decade later I'm only at 320 lbs. Guess it's somewhat comforting knowing ~0.000001% of the population can match me."And oh, the marvel of it! the marvel of it!
