I'm looking at a really good deal with a guy who has about 400 pounds of plates, i could grab 2 45s and 25s olympic and 12 standard 25 plates for about 160 dollars. But he insists I come to his house. I'd really much rather meet up at a walmart or something. It feels a bit fishy meeting up at his house.
Is this normal? Do vendors generally not want to have to lug all of those weights somewhere and just want you to pick up at their house? Got this deal from craigslist

Is it normal for vendors to refuse to meet you up for weights?

Depends on your area. In my area, we typically meet at the persons house.

my uncle says it's normal to go to the buyer's house, so it's a preference thing. personally i wouldn't want anyone i don't know coming to my house.
bring a friend and have them help haul the weights.Domicron's Basement Gym and Fun House

Every time I have bought something I went to the sellers house. If I was the seller, I would not want to lug the weights around.

I've always had the buyer come to my house or if I'm buying I go to theirs. Perfectly normal.

NM said it best, why on earth would you expect him to load up all that weight and bring it to meet you somewhere??
I have people at my house all the time and never had an issue. I do have 4 outside cameras recording at all times as well as an alarm (both in house and barn) as well as a lot of guns but that is just "in case" something happens lol... knock on wood nothing has[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #58 []---[]

Generally, I have had a few people pick things up at the house...only one guy gave me any concern over the phone and he turned out fine...
With your situation...we are talking a lot of weight there...can't really expect him to
haul all that man...seriously! If you pull up and he has two teeth in his head and is playing "dueling banjos", looking like the missing link,
I wouldn't follow him down into the cellar...you'd likely wake up with your underwear on backward in the middle of nowhere with a
nickel in your hand. Go with a friend if you are nervous."Common sense is not so common".

In general, it's usually safe to assume that whatever is easier is what will be done... people are lazy. It's much more convenient to just have people drag stuff out of your garage than to haul it and meet at a public location. Buyers are also lazy and sometimes ask for stuff to be delivered. I've only delivered stuff on rare occassions to business locations that were nearby. It wouldn't be practical to travel far but lots of buyers ask anyway. I've had people ask me to deliver $30 items over 2 hours away --it's ridiculous.
Some guys are probably moving enough equipment that they should be paying taxes (but probably aren't). They're basically operating a full time 2nd hand store out of their garage or storage unit. In that case, it would not be practical to haul to a meeting place each time.
I don't do that much flipping. I've met with people at a public location and at my house. Some stuff (like a rack) would not be practical to take to a meeting place but smaller stuff isn't much trouble. There are lots of nice folks shopping Craigslist but there are even more sleazeballs. I've had people show up unannounced at a later time to see if I still has some other stuff that they didn't buy the first time... I've had an argument over stuff break out when two buyers decide that they also want what the other person was buying... etc. etc. But I've met a lot of nice people too. A lot of high school and college age people shop craigslist. Probably my most enjoyable sale was to a junior high school kid whose mother drove him to the pickup location. His mom had him negotiate on his own and then she handed him the money to hand to me. It was just some weights that I was unloading cheap but for him it was a big deal and it was fun.Last edited by morebarbell; 06-11-2014 at 02:54 AM.

Yes it's normal, like nearly everyone else said, who the heck wants to load hundreds of pounds of weights for a potential "no show". Buyer wants a good deal, go get it, and pack protection just in case you think the seller is Buffalo Bill.

Man...that concealed carry thing would be great if you did it like Clint Eastwood in a western movie wearing his hip holster and a poncho...
The buyer says "Well, I know you're asking for $200, would you take $75"?
That's when you stare him down and flip up the Poncho over one shoulder...."You makin' some kinda Joke"?

Whenever possible, I meet people at a nearby public location in a very good neighborhood with lots of foot and car traffic. I've spent enough time at the location to know what's out of place and what belongs there.
Only when I must, do I have people over. Only during the day, and always while I'm armed. I don't give out the address until I'm convinced the buyer is serious and coming, plus I have some info on the person's identity. It's not hard or time-consuming. Any other protective measures I take I will not divulge on an open forum. . . .You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Hire a dozen heavily-armed bodyguards to go with you. These guys might be available for the right price:
Seriously, just use some common sense; if the seller lives in an area of town in which you're uncomfortable to go, don't go. If anything strikes you as odd when you get there, just leave; you're under no obligation to buy anything. No brain, no gain.

I don't like the idea of having people come over to my house, period.
That was a big factor to me when I unloaded all my extra gear recently. I had one guy come over to buy everything, he is a local flipper, so I felt a little more comfortable than random people. But it was a one time deal and I could send the woman out with the kid while he was here. Probably took 40-50% less, but I did no work other than send him one email, and I got rid of things I don't think will ever sell.Boomer Rep Crew #1

I'm sure some guys have had bad experiences with craigslist, but all of my experiences (buying or flipping) have been position. Last night I drove around 20 minutes to an area that I was not familiar with. The houses were run down and it was definitely not a great area. But I ended up getting some great York gear out of it, and had a great chat with the seller about lifting. For whatever reason, most guys that I've had contact with that are into working out are good guys.

I've gone to people's houses and had people over. Like atty I can get a pretty good vibe on people by talking to them. I always conceal carry out. While home I just carry. All of my workout equipment deals have gone well. Other things I have sold like retro jordan shoes I meet out somewhere. It really depends on what your selling and what crowd it attracts.

I've had really good interactions with people so far, and I can say that I have had a lot of transactions over the past couple of years, both buying and selling. There have certainly been a few here and there whom I didn't care for, but mostly they weeded themselves out while emailing/phone calling about the sale. A couple of times I have gotten a bad vibe and made arrangements to meet someone in the Walmart parking lot during daylight hours, but for the most part my transactions have been positive.
I certainly don't blame Stasher and others for being cautious, but if I would become that concerned for my safety, I need to either cut off communication with the person who is making me feel that way, or I need to quit Craigslist altogether.[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #29 []---[]
