If there were only straight men and women that would mean a human tribe would have a small number of adults and a huge amount of children. Making them easy prey for predators and rival warriors.

If 20% of your tribe are gay then that means you have a number of adults who will not procreate and therefore the balance of adults to children in the group is more balanced and therefore the group is better able to defend itself and has more adults who can go out hunting or build and cook for the group SRS.
