    Are fats necessary?

I understand carbs are necessary for energy, protein for muscle, but what of fat? What sort of fat do they mean - chocolate ice cream etc,or some other type of fat?

Fats are very necessary, just stay away from the trans fats...those are no good.

    In theory this is false...

In real life tho, you at least need veggies for vitamins and mineral therefore you need carbs.

Fat and Protein and the only macronutrients necessary, carbs are NOT necessary.

Protein, is necessary so that the body can repair its tissues and grow new tissue, and fats for hormonal balance among other things.

Carbs will be used for energy, however fats can play that role as well in the absence of carbs.

Adequate fat is necessary for optimal performance, especially for the endocrine system (responsible for hormone production).

Additionally, essential fatty acids (most commonly known ones are Omega 3s and Omega 6s) cannot be produced by the body and must be supplied by the diet. Theoretically it's possibly to have adequate fat intake but still be deficient in one or more of the essentially fatty acids, most commonly Omega 3, which is why many people supplement with fish oil.

I'm familiar with the recommendation for 0.4gm dietary fat intake per lb of lean body mass, although I've heard other recommendations as well.

Yes they are necessary. However, you should be getting your fat from better sources than "chocolate and ice cream". Think about your question logically, do you really think that it's optimal for a human being to get his or her fat from those types of foods?

In general better to get fat, or any calories, from sources that are dense in micronutrients. So ideally you'd get the majority of your fats from nuts, grains, avocados, vegetables, olive oil, fish, meats, etc. But if some of your fat comes from "chocolate and ice cream" it wouldn't be an issue unless your intake was excessive and displaced "healthier" foods from your diet.

Pretty much was just clarifying what you had said and what I said earlier; I agree with you but seemed like OP was thinking in black and white and didn't want my post to reinforce that.

Simply saying you eat ______ food isn't enough information.

yes fat is neccessary, you need a balance of omega 3,6, and 9's. most americans get too many 6's and that's why they have inflammation, so balance it out with 3's, eat fish with omegas, not that farm raised crap, take fish oil pills, if your not getting in enough omega 3;s though fish meals

going further, from a testosterone perspective a man needs about 20 % of his macros from fat intake or testosterone levels can drop. If a man is on trt, then the synethetic hormone takes care of the job and can go lower in fat without any lower testosterone conquences
