Nice work man. Yeah zooming is pretty killing for the cinematic look. We use prime lenses (non zoomable with a shallower depth of field and way better light sensitivity) almost exclusively. My favorite cheap a$$ portrait lens is a $90 50mm F1.8. If you want to know what kind of image/price/specs any lens has check out this epic database:

Before I do a shoot I select lenses that give the best look from this site. Especially check out the Leica Noctilux lenses. These are the holy grail in photography and go for $10k a piece second hand. If you want to create a very striking portrait that lens is epic. I rented it a couple of times and focus-pulling is worse than trying to put a thread through a needle blindfolded, once you got it right it is magic:

Usually we bring 3 lenses if we go run and gunning. A 10-20mm Sigma lens (really really good optics, not very light sensitive but it compensates in image quality), a 30mm Sigma F1.4 protrait lens, a 50mm Canon F1.8 for portraits and maybe a 105mm of any kind but we rarely use it.

If you have problems focusing and moving the lens too much try this contraption:



I use it to pull focus without camera wobble. I 3D printed it so it cost me exactly $10.

They shoot their stuff on a RED with 300fps 4k. It is well worth the money.

They sell EPIC stuff for editors like you.

This is all great info thank you. I bookmarked your post for future reference - the tech stuff can be really overwhelming. I only learned how to use a camera 2 years ago and I've been shooting all the while with an entry level D5100. The only upgrade I ever did was a prime lens f/1.8
While I would love to improve on picture sharpness and focus pulling and smoother panning with better tech, I don't want the learning curve to be too steep since I shoot everything on the fly.

Well, I dig the natural aspect of the video a great deal.
The forest shots/scenery were wonderful, just imagine a touch of a great body of water or perhaps some waterfall action.
Music wasn't overpowering, it was very complimentary to the dialogue- the little bit of darkness was nice too.

Yeah I feel you man, I would have shot much more had I stayed in Canada longer, I was only there for a short trip and was pretty much just shooting whatever we could find. not much was planned
