One time when I was about 10, just to piss off my mom I told her she owed me a penny and wouldn't stop asking for it. She then got up grabbed the nearest wooden spoon and chased me up the stairs. I then got in my room and cowered behind the door like a Jew child during the holocaust screaming in terror. She eventually forced her way in and I tried hiding behind my bed but she managed to get a couple good whacks in and left with a smirk on her face saying "bet that one hurt" and then left me in my crying misery. My friends mostly find that story lolzy tho.

I'm saying children learn what's right and wrong a lot faster through getting hit with a switch/hand/belt opposed to no tv for an hour or now that's not nice and apologize...
I'm going to take a guess you live in a city maybe? In the rural Midwest, where I reside, you can tell when kids have or have not been reprimanded for past actions on how they act now.pls stay safe

My mom and dad just used soap lol, but I agree 100% punishment builds character and teaches you right from wrong. All the kids I go to school with that get in trouble for incidents involving stealing/drinking/drugs/vandalism for the majority are people who have never faced punishment or reprimand; trying to leave class and political views out of the debate, but I believe that plays a factor.

I have the most amazing parents. I DONT know if punishment worked for me. I dont THINK its 100% necessary. May be I was going to be who I am anyway? I' dont think anyone feels that they deserved, It just had an impact on who they are. The consequences are worthless in the way many parents "discipline" their child.
BRB, go to your room, brb give me Ipod, brb no candy.
These are all INEFFECTIVE. Because it does not effect the child emotionally.

There is a fine line between 'beating' and discipline, and this conversation always blurs that line and discusses them as the same thing. I received stern discipline from my parents a few times while growing up. Spanked and got the belt once or twice. I learned valuable lessons from those times and honestly helped me in understanding right from wrong. Kids dont think the same way as adults, they cant comprehend logic for the most part. A rare occasional spanking when the kid really goofs can be really beneficial.
But totally against punching kids, kicking them, hitting them excessively. That can cause a whole slew of issues and resentment.Benes

agreed completely, I needed disciplined growing up; but the issue of people taking their frustrations out on kids is something completely different. Furthermore using "hit" in the Thread Title makes me believe that OP wanted this line blurred or maybe just wanted to hear some wild stories I don't know since I'm not him lol.

Ah, this chit. I had crazy Iranian parents. My dad used to tuck his thumb in between his middle and index fingers and make a fist with the middle finger knuckle prominent and hit me in the side of the head. Hurt like ****. My dad used to also hit me with his belt. My mother used to slap me all the time, one time, I think I was 9 or 10, (I deserved it but it was way over the top) I told her to shut up and she came running down the hallway, tackled me and bit into my head so hard I thought I would die. Then she laughed as I cried about it. My uncle would punch me straight in the mouth if I got rude, once he ate a cupcake my teacher gave me (I think I was 6) and I got upset and yelled, and he socked me in the jaw. They divorced when I was 13 and amid their own drama and personal issues they actually became abusive, taking their **** out on me. Overall they spent more time beating each other than hitting me, so I saw a lot of that; police getting called to the house, neighbors getting riled up, etc. They stopped doing this after the divorce and when I got bigger by like 14 or 15 they stopped hitting me but we'd both instigate fights. This led to trouble during the time but I calmed down by the time I was 17. It does a number on you, but I wouldn't say physical discipline is abuse. I would say what ended up scarring me was them taking out their marital frustrations on me and the manipulation when they used me to get back at one another and turn me against them. That really is a lot to put on a 13 year old. But that's life, no one's parents are perfect... or sane. If anything it made me a very non-confrontational person.
