We agree more than we disagree. Gems exist but they are not mainstream. Pretty much if a movie has a larger then average marketing campaign you can almost be certain it's gonna suck (avatar, TDKR)

You're asking for classics four to one year later. They're called CLASSICS for a reason. Good example, 2001: A Space Odyssey was considered crap back when it was released. Now it is a classic.

Inception, gladiator, matrix, 28 days later, saving private ryan, goodwill hunting

I think we know they're classics and they will go down as such. I don't imagine another zombie movie topping 28 days later or another war movie topping SPR. Many have tried and many have failed.

considered crap by whom? The visuals alone are legendary and it got its respect from critics and audiences in that regard. It's still somewhat a polarizing movie especially to ppl watching it now but no one can deny that visually it's a masterpiece. It's a classic on that merit alone.

Regardless, most movies that are GOAT tier are recognized at the time. The only ones you usually have to wait for are science fiction and maybe horror movies

Every movie made is in competition with every movie ever made. There will never be a killer-robot from the future chase movie that's better than Terminator 2, because quality is an absence of flaws.

When you get down to it 90 minutes is nothing. A limerick. The medium should go the same way it went in writing - into the extreme niche.

Man i'm old. You have a point but at the same time I've been watching those movies over and over again long ago. Replay value is a good indicator of a classic movie. I've seen each of those anywhere from 3-10+ times.

    Per wikipedia,
Pauline Kael said it was "a monumentally unimaginative movie," and Stanley Kauffmann of The New Republic called it "a film that is so dull, it even dulls our interest in the technical ingenuity for the sake of which Kubrick has allowed it to become dull." Renata Adler of The New York Times wrote that it was "somewhere between hypnotic and immensely boring." Variety's 'Robe' believed the film was a "Big, beautiful, but plodding sci-fi epic … A major achievement in cinematography and special effects, 2001 lacks dramatic appeal to a large degree and only conveys suspense after the halfway mark."

I think we know they're classics and they will go down as such. I don't imagine another zombie movie topping 28 days later or another war movie topping SPR. Many have tried and many have failed.
good will hunting was 1997. 1997 had a lot of awesome movies. I like 28 days later a lot, but there aren't that many serious, realistic zombie movies.

I'll wreck you. Saw Transcendence last night.... great premise, okay first half and then went full retard hollywood second half with navy seals, explosions and the rest. It could have been so much better. I still liked it though, we need more movies like this, it's just they always start good and find ways to go proto-typical hollywood and predictable on everyone so people feel like they got what they came for.

If Her is a terrible movie to you then I'd love to see what's great.

what most people think is a form of collective insanity

not to mention that much of the acclaim going around nowadays is bought and paid for in advance

her was actually not terribly made, but it just rustled my jimmies to the point that it undermined my enjoyment of the movie... I usually like spike jonze but this one was just not doing it for me

Regardless, most movies that are GOAT tier are recognized at the time. The only ones you usually have to wait for are science fiction and maybe horror movies
Vertigo flopped at the box office and received mixed reviews from critics when it was first released. It is now considered the best film of all time.

Much of the "acclaim" movies get today is similar to the video game industry which has long been a joke as far as accurate reviews go.. aka it's all paid for. 5 STARS!!!

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. I and most people I know loved Her. I normally don't like Jonze's self-written work, but he hit it out of the park with that movie. I'd still like for him to collaborate with Charlie Kaufman (another talented director) on his future work though.

It's not a hard and fast rule. I suspect that back then people weren't as critical when it came to film, both audience and critics. People literally live through film now, different times I guess?

OP, since consider some of the big movies with major studio pushes 1998-2008. All the ones listed below were either major top 10 box office hits or big studio flops.

    1998
    Armageddon
    Doctor Doolittle
    Deep Impact
    Godzilla
    Patch Adams
    Lethal Weapon 4 (#11)

    1999
    the phantom menace
    tarzan
    runaway bride
    big daddy
blair witch project (not dated well at all)
    the 13th warrior (huge flop)

    2000
    the grinch
    mission impossible 2
    what women want
    supernova (bomb)
    battlefield earth (bomb)
    red planet (bomb)

    2001
    pearl harbor
    planet of the apes
    jurassic park 3
    final fantasy (flop)

    2002
    men in black 2
    pluto nash (bombed)
    treasure planet (bomb)
    Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (bomb)
    k-19 the widowmaker (flopped too)

2003 -- pretty good year, but i'll mention some
    matrix 2 & 3
t3 (i liked it but it's not as good as T1 or T2)
    bruce almighty (god wut ****)
    bad boys 2 (#11)

    2004
    the day after tomorrow
    meet the fockers
    the alamo (bomb)

    2005 (okay year, mostly)
    sahara (bombed)
    stealth (bombed)

    2006
    the da vinci code
    night at the museum
    superman returns
    pirates of the caribbean 2

    2007
    spiderman 3
    shrek 3
    transformers
    pirates of the carribean 3
    national treasure 2
    alvin and the chipmunks
i am legend (ok for what it is but does it really standout vs. similar movies today?)

    2008
    speed racer (bomb)
    indiana jones 4
    hancock
    twilight
quantum of solace (worst daniel craig bond movie)
    horton hears a who

On the whole, i don't think the major movies today are any worse than the comparable ones, aside from us being hammered over the head with a formula.

If you go into The Avengers 8 and expect an original and thought out movies that's your fault. If you like film then put in the effort and keep track of who directs what. If not, then stop bitching and stop watching movies.
