Picked myself up a Pentax Spotmatic over the weekend, the seller was nice enough to throw in a wide angle lens, i'm excited to take it on some outdoor trips over the summer.
I've got some basic training with editing and digital SLRs but i've always loved the approach to film.
Are there any sites or resources you photography misc brahs can recommend to a film amateur?10/03/13

Not that I could find. Ted Forbes and his Art of Photography is probably the most vehement enthusiast on video. I learned a few things from him about pushing/pulling film during my B&W class. Do you intend to do your own develop/print?

Sup guys. I'm trying to help my friend out with some portrait shots of him at his gym and was wondering what external flash should I buy for this situation? I haven't ever looked into external flashes at all so I'm pretty clueless. It definitely won't be a professional looking studio shot but it'll definitely be an upgrade from his point and shoot camera lol. I'm using a D7200 with a 35mm lens as well. Thanks!
Ps, any tips for portrait photography would be appreciated

Hey guys. Is a 24mm lens on an aps-c sensor (38mm?) decent for full body portrait shots in a relatively tight space? Or would there be bad distortion? I was looking at the EF-S 24mm 2.8 STM.
Edit: I guess a more accurate answer would depend on the actual distance right? I was thinking pretty much close enough to fit the whole subject on the screen exactly and not leaving much space above the head or below the feet. Still not very accurate I know lol. Not really sure if there is a definite answer depending on all the factorsLast edited by MGFusion; 04-28-2015 at 08:46 PM.

"Brimstone Scales"
The rock scales left behind from the eruption of Skookum Volcano in Alaska's Wrangell St. Elias National Park and Preserve make me think of a great mythical dragon the size of a mountain. The only way I can describe this hike is "otherworldly". Especially as the storm that moved in over us carried a somewhat ominous character.
I intend to go back to this place this summer to explore further. And perhaps to camp on the volcano and await excellent light. All Hail the Ultimate Master, "I Know More Than The Generals Do", Donald Camacho Dr. Pepper X-Ray AR-15 Trump

You question are just too general. Take some picture and post them. At least then you can get some better feedback. If you're into portraits, start off with a 50 mm and go from there. As for flash, use a flash when there's not enough light.

Hmm. I did actually take some photos of a friend today with an even wider angle (18mm (or 28ish mm)) and they did come out pretty good in my opinion. I'll probably show you guys to see what yall think when I transfer them onto my computer. But I wasnt super close to her which I guess helps. Hmmm so I guess it really is a matter of perspective. Whether the distortion, if any, adds to the shot or doesnt. Plus it also depends on how I position the angle of the camera too. So that is a way that I can more or less reduce distortion to an extent correct?

Couple from this past weekend...
Do these images look grainy to anyone else? Trying to figure out if it's just this monitor at work or if it's the image itself.

about to move to Vancouver next month, this will be a great opportunity for me to shoot more; ill try take my dslr along with me everywhere i go during my time there.
anyone can recommend me a decent zoom lens to go with my D7100 that is not too pricey? ($300-400) i already have a decent 35mm len, so im looking for 200-300mm focal length to switch things up. I should add that im willing to buy 2nd hand so consider the used price.
my friend has suggested Tamron SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD, what do you guys think? any other suggestions?Last edited by Pr0No0B; 04-29-2015 at 09:17 AM. Reason: added budget

I think you might long for something faster. You are also missing a lot of focal length in between. Personally, an f/4 would be my minimum. Although modern sensors do compensate a lot more for lessor lens capability. Try Terry White. He gives a pretty good overview and easy to follow getting started video with PPCC.
Also any tips for filming modes, seems the best recommendation is to use manual mode at least when theres no moving. What ive read its to have recording @ 24fps with shutter speed at double this (50), aperture set to as low as possible (is this right?) and ISO to get the correct level of lighting, trying not to exceed 1600. Any advice on this would be a help. Also when walking around filming the AF seems to be a bit slow and back and forth, this is on manual mode though so unsure if I should have it on a different setting to improve this.
In regards to Premiere Pro, Ive had a very small play around. I originally imput the H.264 file in although this was jumpy, I used the Adobe Encoder to encode into MPEG-2 and the quality seemed comparable and the jumpiness was gone. Is this the correct method to use?
Was also going to invest in a Rode Videomic Go, unless anyone recommends otherwise.
Thanks in advance for any advice guys.

Edit: Serious question
Any of you have a huge following online for your photos? How does one develop a fanbase, and which platforms do you use? I see a lot of people taking GREAT photos that go unnoticedLast edited by Lamborg; 04-29-2015 at 01:46 PM.

Just wanted to add to the post production,a little. The following image is a sensor shown at high magnification. The lighter pixels are green and the darker are the red and blue in the monochrome shot.So...on 18 mega pixel sensor is 18 million of these pixels, which lets the red, blue or green light in and then the cameras processor determines the combination and we see the image as multicoloured..BUT,( copied from elsewhere vvv)
"Notice how each pixel site is separated by that small area, well that is the reason why ALL digital images need sharpening. Your images when captured have a small area between each pixel site on the sensor where no light is captured (we are talking really small), but that 'dead' area, means that all digital images are not as sharp as they could be straight out of the camera. The technology inside your camera fills in this 'dead' area by aligning the data from each pixel up against the data from the neighbouring pixels, it is clever, but the result is your digital images straight from your camera will always be a little soft."
First is at 10x magnification and second is at 40x
