In on photography thread, enjoy this chitty picture I took of my dirty car. I haven't processed the raw file yet so here's an unedited jpeg. Sony SLT-A55, I think I had my 50MM 1.8 prime on for this one.
Car bragging aside, here's some pics I've taken to pay for said car. Use a 75-300 when I need to get chit done.
Only shoot jpeg for racing stuff as I'm expected to take 1000 photos a day for two days. Quantity over quality I guess, oh well I still get paid.

Latest dog shot. Shelby was a bit fidgety, but wrapping her in a blanket did the trick.

I have a question for the portrait/studio shooters
I'm looking in to getting a better lighting set of consisting of
set of 2-3 strobes
soft boxes.
Back drop - black and white
reflectors
What would you recommend as a good intermediate kit? I'm getting more work doing products and I want to move into the portrait and head shots, to try and move towards doing school/college portraits
Are there any brands to avoid? My budget will probably be £1-1500www.AdamKappa.co.uk

Ordered some new gear today, hoping to get used to shooting with it before vacation.
Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens
Tiffen 52mm Graduated 0.6 ND Filter
Lexar CFR1 Card Reader
New battery to replace the two that are barely holding charge now
Lightroom 5
Edit: forgot to get a new polarizing filter, current one won't fit on the new lens =(

Was going to recommend AlienBees, but realized that you are not from the US.
A word of advice is to make sure you account everything or else you will end up highly overspending. Do not forget about radio receivers, transmitters, C-stands or heavy-duty lightstands, power packs (optional), sandbags, safety cables, adapters, etc. You will want to visualize everything set up and working in your studio and calculate the costs.?

Cheers for the quick replies! appreciated
I totally forgot sandbags, they look quite handy. Yea the UK seems to have different products promoted, Elinchrom seems to be quite big here
Have you seen Peter Hurleys lighting set up? I want to do something similar to that but on a budget. So 2 strobes on the left and right then reflectors in the top/bottom middle section.
Some strobes seem to have more universal fittings, so I don't want to buy into a company that has a limited range of adaptors
I'm waiting to see if I get much attention once my current project gets revealed, (photos are going up on the 28th) then making a decision in the next few months.www.AdamKappa.co.uk

went fishing yesterday and took this shot which I thought was kind of cool. it's just the reflection of the trees in the water, flipped upside-down, but you can see the debris in the water and if you look closely, some ripples in the leaves which make it look a bit trippy. other than that though, the water was so calm it looks like a normal photo of trees.

Indeed it is. That's why you build you system and do what you can on your way to getting everything you want then doing what you'd like. As for me, and since I sit in the middle between still and motion photography, I'm a little past the half way point. My goal is the studio with still and video 30/70 respectively.

First, I didn't say I didn't like it. However, the point of art, any art is to be able to give reasons why we should appreciate it. I leaned that in school and try to approach all art with an open mind.
Since we're more than just casual observers here, perhaps we can expand on why its good or bad? Maybe take a page for the art class and extol the merits of infrared photography? Can you tell us anything about it that we can appreciate?🎥

I would probably say it is the contrast between the bright IR reflecting properties of plant life against the dark of sky with the refined edges of the cloudlines.

I could just imagine this as a video timelapse. Imagine dem swaying grass blades and rustling tree leaves, dem clouds rolling by.
Infrared could be an awesome tool for cinematography, in my opinion. It has surrealistic qualities that can be used for symbolism and metaphors.?

IMO 1000+ photos after the cut is overkill, especially when I know that not all of them are as polished as I'd like. Thing is, the people in charge don't have an eye for it/don't care, they just want a chitload of unnecessary photos. Yes, they told me specifically to get at least 700-1000 a day (2 days) and have a finished album of at least 1000 photos.
When you're on a small track shooting the same classes running 3-4 times a 10 hour day things get extremely repetitive. Not going to complain much because I still have fun, but I just think I could put together a smaller selection with a bit more fit and finish. I could easily meet all the individual kart/running class photo requirements.
Like I said, oh well.

Nice shots. I like the comical look on Shelby's face. Pets can be a real pain to shoot.
Here's one of my cats, he's too fat and lazy to be a challenge.

I appreciate it just by observing it. Apparently art class ruined your ability to do so?
I create a lot of music as well. I certainly don't sit down at the piano and extol the merits of the piece that may spill out of me half an hour later. Once I've depressed record, I certainly don't have to prove that piece's merit for it to be worthy of an "art" tag.
Creativity is the root of art. Attempting to validate art like this completely kills it and it makes me sad for you. It's ironic that you said you like to approach art with an open mind, yet in the very next breath, laid out qualifications for it.
Cliffs:
The purpose of art is to spark, create, and speak your mind in fresh and different ways. Anyone's art certainly does not have to be validated to be considered art. No.*LF Chat Crew

No artist needs to give viewers a reason they should appreciate their work. Their art is merely their expression of feelings or ideas (pretty standard definition of art). If you as the observer don't find the particular style or work of art appealing (infrared photography), you shouldn't have to be given reasons why you should like it. You either do or you don't. That's the freedom and nature of art.
