cuz, I did a pseudo elective in kerala, India a few years ago with a charity called futurefaces, which is run by a cleft surgeon (MaxFax by training) from SW england. The charity even paid for my flights and everything, and very nice team over in kerala and from the britihs doctors that go over there.

Futurefaces also fund placements in the european centres and another centre in hyderabad.

Proff Adenwalla in kerala at the Thrissur medical college is GOAT, such a great teacher and all his juniors had nothing but praise for him. he's like 90 years old and still practicing.

Any of you guys can recommend some books written by a doctor? What is like to be a doctor, touching stories that sort of thing...... Thinking of sitting theGAMSAT to start med at Sydney Uni or UQ next year but still undecided and want to read some stuff that may sway my decision in either direction.

nah, i'm not from USYD.. pretentious wankers of peace
it's a postgrad uni (i'm in an undergrad med program); a lot of their students did stuff like arts or law as their undergrad & have no understanding of basic science..

it's easy for you to do a year here as a PGY2 (there are heaps of RMOs from the UK in my hospital)
but plastics is one of the most competitive programs here, they accept <10 trainees nationally & their selection criteria are pretty specific to plastics (http://www.plasticsurgery.org.au/lin...5F/showMeta/0/), so an accent wouldn't count for chit & i wouldn't be hopeful

grass is greener on the other side
(but i heard the NHS wants to scrap weekend penalty pay rates or something along those lines..? lulz that would suck)

Meh, my elective HBB was pretty nice/chilled. We didn't even talk about medical stuff in any of our conversations which is always a bonus when meeting someone new.

pt being palliated (#NOF not suitable for surgical repair --> aspiration pneumonia, discussed with fam & all treatment withdrawn)
pre-rounded with my intern & resident, pt was sleeping but breathing pretty heavily

rounded with my consultant/attending 15 mins later -
registrar tells him that the pt's being palliated, consultant enters room to check on pt
(he was the only one to enter the room but from the doorway i'm 99.9% sure that the pt wasn't breathing)
consultant is like "okie dokes, that's all fine" & moves onto next pt

nurse appears at the end of the 15 min ward round to say that the pt has died

LOL'd when I read a thread on SDN about how to dress for interview. The OP / guy giving advice was a repeat applicant who got denied like 3 years in a row. Guess that conservative suit and tie really worked out for him.

The interview wear thread over there was lulzy if I recall. Brb black suit. Brb white shirt. Brb red tie. And then people would come in and say chit like "should I wear a 3 piece suit?" "can I wear a pocket square?" "YOU GUYS, JCpenny is having a sale I got my suit for $125!!!1!"

funny though - on our interview tour, we went to the ICU and an elderly patient was being rolled to her surgery. she looks up and sees 10 people in suits and says "it looks like i'm at my wake!"
