American magician David Blaine, dubbed "the modern day Houdini," is to be suspended in a glass box over the River Thames in London for more than six weeks without food.

The flamboyant, 30-year-old New Yorker, famed for spectacular stunts atop poles and frozen in ice, is to be hauled into solitary confinement on Sept. 5 in what he called "the most extreme exercise in isolation and physical deprivation ever attempted."

Against the backdrop of London's Tower Bridge, he will spend 44 days suspended by a crane in his clear plexiglass box "with no food, no communication and no distractions of any kind."

He will have one tube to give him water and another for urinating.

"We are all capable of infinitely more than we believe," Blaine said as details were released of his endurance test that will be carried live on British television.

This is the first time that Blaine, who rose to fame with his "street magic" displays in New York, has ever attempted a major stunt outside the United States.

He has endured being entombed in a block of ice for 61 hours, has been buried for a week and spent 35 hours standing on the top of an 80-foot pillar in midtown Manhattan.

Beginning Sept. 5, Blaine says, he will spend 44 days in a Plexiglas box, 2m long by 2m tall by 1m wide, suspended over the Thames River in London. He will have just a set of clothes and a blanket, no food, and will receive only water via a feeding tube. He will have pens and paper to keep a journal (perhaps to be published later) and very little else to keep his mind occupied. His bodily functions will be handled with a small backpack containing diapers and a tube to urinate in.

He added, however, that if the water were loaded with sugar or nutrients, the challenge would be much less impressive. "If it was clear Gatorade, you could probably survive on it forever," Kuehl said.
Blaine states that it will be pure water.

Despite the danger of collapse, muscle wastage, dramatic weight loss, organ failure and even death Blaine is confident that he will last the 44 days.

He added: "We are all capable of infinitely more than we believe. We are stronger and more resourceful than we know and we can endure much more than we think we can.

"In truth, the only restrictions on our capacity to astonish ourselves and each other are imposed by our own minds."

Medical experts say hunger strikes can cause severe and sometimes permanent damage to the body.

There is a risk Blaine's eyesight will be affected, which may be irreversible. After three weeks, he could suffer hallucinations and dementia. Bones weaken after four weeks and potentially permanent brain damage can set in at five weeks.

Last night, Blaine's spokesman insisted measures would be taken to ensure he did not die live on TV.

He added: "Doctors will be available at any time should they be needed. David's team, in conjunction with the medical professionals, will halt the event if they believe David to be in any kind of danger."

But they will have to guess how he is feeling because no one will be allowed to speak to him.

Blaine will enter the box on September 5 and leave on October 19. Sky TV is covering the stunt live.

This guy sucks! His illusions aren't very intertaining, more like endurance feats. Remeber when he was supposed to be in the block of ice and he went in with only shorts but on the 3rd day was wearing a hat? Penn and Teller punked him on a bunch of his tricks and basicly said he was crap and I agree. He did bang Madonna and Josie Maren so I give him that.

How could you not like David Blaine? This guys is nuts. Just be glad he doesn't have any strong religious values, he could be the next Manson or Christ for that matter.

ok people we all know its physically not possible without dying so how do you reckon this trick is done.

The only thing I can think of is a projection of himself, but i'm not sure its thats possible.

After 3 days with no water your kidneys will start to go into failure mode.

+ How is he going to piss and **** up there without the whole world seeing?... work that one out.

Its all illusions noting more. Magic tricks are just that. If anyone saw a show on TV called Secrets Reveal with a magician wearing a MASK? They reveal how some of these tricks are performed. The one where Blaine was in a ice cube, he really had a trap door underneath and an body double to switch with.

With that say i give David Blaine some credit as his magic tricks are more than your basic making a nice b!tch disappeare. or cutting her in half.

judging by the numerous mistakes and questions you asked already answered in the article, I will tell you right now you didnt even read it.. he will HAVE water

if he was so amazing that he could go without food for so long (which im pretty sure no other human being can) then why doesnt he do it wihtout water aswell.

because as someone said it wont just be water.

nothing this guy does impresses me thanks to, as some one else said, maigic secrets revealed.

ive seen all his tricks stunts revealed as fakes. and i dont see why this is going to be any different.

if hes so magical. let him drop into the thames and lets all watch his magic beat them undercurrents!

yep, his previous ones have been fake...the ice box and the buried alive, he had a trap door in which to escape to eat and rest. Im not sure about the one where he stood on a pole for days though, anyone know? There will be some secret to the starving stunt, as he is most likely to die, becuase he does not have much fat to live off.
