Maybe I'm saying bullchit here, if so aware me, but I've always wondered, is life so bad in third world countries? I mean what I've always been told (never been there so I don't know) was that life in those kind of places is horrible but I don't really believe it. As long as you have something to eat shouldn't it be fine? Sure life is less comfortable in those kind of countries but people also live a much more relaxed lifestyle... I don't see that as a bad life either.
Am I right or the level of misery is really overwhelming?

I was going to bust you but I just wiki'd internet in Rwanda. Apparently Rwanda has the best internet in Africa and actually has high speed fiber lines. Lucky for you. You still must be rich though. In south africa only rich people had internet--and it was dial up internet (lol). But because of cell phones, pretty much everyone has high speed internet there, but it is cell phone (or radio tower) internet as opposed to fiber lines.

I actually noticed in Botswana that the income disparity wasn't as wide. The avg person there was more educated than in south africa too. I imagine Rwanda would be a similar experience, based on what you said, to Botswana.

The only reason american see poor ppl in africa is because of "non-profits" trying to steal money in the name of charity or Bono trying to justify his lavish lifestyle by pretending he cares about africans. If it weren't for these terrible ppl, I think americans would be generally unaware of poverty in Africa.

Are women in Rwanda hot compared to other continents? I hear women in Ethopia are unusually pretty.

The tooth gap thing, I think it's prevalent because of natural selection just like the booty thing. Yes, women in Rwanda are considered hot in the region but you're right, Ethiopians are considered to be really pretty. I haven't been around a lot of Africa but a friend and I are doing Cape Town to Cairo in December. I will tell you then .

I've lived in the west and I've lived here. I've seen poverty in both places and IMO, poor people in the 'global north' are a lot more miserable. Fine, they may have mod cons and all of that but the quality of life is crap. In the more developed nations people just don't live enough, I feel. Everyone's so caught up in the rat race and trying to buy more stuff they don't need. Tebag was right about something. People here may be poorer (and here I mean income poverty) but they are a lot happier in my opinion. So no, the misery is not overwhelming otherwise our suicide rates would be as high as they are in the Scandinavian countries. GDP as a measure of 'development' is BS. It does not factor in happiness because how do you measure that really?

And for some people, that might be true but I would wager if you conducted a survey among immigrants and asked them to tell the truth, many of them would go back home if they could. while in general most people are decently off in africa there is a percentage of the population that will go to great lengths to find jobs/social support and opportunity in other countries in europe, and they risk it


the same as mexicans crossing the US; there is plenty of wealth in parts of mexico that will make some americans jealous, but for a small population there is no jobs or social support so they risk jumping the border or carrying drugs.

income disparity, education, jobs and social support in terms of addressing the income disparity with taxation will be the primary challenges of this century - for both the developed and developing countries
