Trial lawyer, wrongful death case involving a trucker that left his truck parked in the middle of the highway where my guy crashed into the back of it and died. Defendants offered $200k. Took them to trial, got a $1.21mm jury verdict minus 40% off because it was partially my client's own damn fault, so total verdict of $726k.
If I had accepted the $200k offer, the attorney's fee would have been $67,666.00
On the verdict of $726k, the attorney's fee is $242,000
Was in the office from 7am-9pm for a week straight and lost 8 pounds over the course of the week (stress), but the feeling of winning makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Edit: srs, no april fools.

To everyone in this thread just keep in mind most lawyers make chit money now and are buried in 6 figure student loan debt. I am not saying OP is lying, I am just saying his situation is a rarity
Skepticism is the chastity of the intellect, and it is shameful to surrender it too soon or to the first comer: there is nobility in preserving it coolly and proudly through long youth, until at last, in the ripeness of instinct and discretion, it can be safely exchanged for fidelity and happiness

Nighttime on the tollway... trucker gets sideswiped by another car.... minor property damage crash. Dumbass doesn't pull his vehicle off the roadway. Doesn't set out warning triangles. Instead, gets out of his cab, and walks across the highway and tells the other driver to call the cops. Trucker didn't call the cops himself because he couldn't speak english. He stays out of his truck for 10-15 minutes and then gets back into his truck and sits there for 10 minutes. I argued he was trying to fix up his logbooks, which were demonstrably false. So after 20-25 minutes, my guy comes along, tries to swerve at the last minute, and plows right into the truck.
I had a professor come in who wrote the book on highway safety and testify that the truck would be very hard to perceive as being stopped. All the state police agreed that the truck was a definite hazard.

Worked my ass off for them, and it's not like they had the resources to pay for a lawyer upfront. He left behind a 17 year old daughter (now 23) who will at least be able to have a comfortable life, even though money is never going to bring back her dad.
The insurance company wanted to give them nothing. $200k was their highest offer. She is VERY happy and has no problem with my fee.
