Looking for a bench and found this:
://homemadestrength.blogspot.com/2011/05/strongest-bench-youll-never-buy.html?m=1
(You have to add in the http)
Seems crazy, but it makes sense. How would you feel about benching on one of these?

I used to have one, but the wolf wrecked it... My new bench made of bricks is holding up well. straw... Never again.
Srs, just save up and find a used commercial bench, you might be happy with the wood one for a week, but you know you're gonna end up with a real bench sooner or later, just buy a real bench to start with.

The thing is... if you have money to spend on a power rack or on a bench, but not both, it's better to spend the money on a rack and build yourself a wood bench. I would guess that the wood bench in question is probably stronger than many of the benches made by the "bad" companies listed in the FAQ.
Several years ago, I built myself a pair of wood boxes upon which I could stand to do belt squats. Someone once asked me if they were strong enough, so I conducted this experiment using all of the plates that I had at the time. This is 465lbs of plates concentrated on the 4.25" diameter circle which is the bottom of the loading pin upon which the plates were stacked.
Here's a photo of the loading pin at the start, before putting any plates on it:
And here's a photo showing the daylight underneath the plates, which shows that the load really was concentrated on the end of the loading pin. I had placed the loading pin in the center of the platform, which should be the weakest point.
Here's a photo of the box without any load:
Here's a photo which shows its inside construction. The bench mentioned in the original post uses more 2x4 supports than the box I built. OTOH, the 3/4" plywood used for the sides does add some reinforcement.

Nice work on the belt squat boxes, those look great! I use a homemade adjustable squat box myself and love it. However, I still think with the bench it's worth saving up a little $ and buying a decent flat bench to start out with. Even without the labor, someone would have $30+ into building a wood bench, you should be able to find a decent flat bench for ~$50 on CL. For something like our belt squat boxes or my squat box, I'd go with homemade wood ones, but with the bench it's just too little $ difference to make it worthwhile, IMO.
Of course, I have a Super Bench and two Cybex commercial benches in my home gym, so I might not be the best one to argue about cost vs utility (I've found few exercises which require more than once FID bench... But that didn't keep me from collecting three).

Check this thread out, I'm pretty sure there are decent benches in there for around 100, that will be a thousand times nicer than that wood bench.

I've always pine-ed for such a bench.

My flat bench is made with 2*12s for the top and legs. A couple of 2*4s tie the legs together. One a couple of inches off the ground and the other right against the top. Should cost much more than about 25 dollars these days. Mine will hold something well north of 700 pounds and not even budge. Loaded plates on it and stood on it for a picture years ago.
