problem is that most people do them wrong.
im a noob PL'er but i think for the greater percentage of raw lifters out there, there is no need for box squats.
I know that i implemented them when i had some knee injury and i squatted to a box that was high enough not to stimulate the pain in my knee joint.

They are a good tool to use here and there, mostly for short cycles. They are good for building explosive power out of the hole. But especially considering your age, and just starting, just squat. Learn proper form and technique. Leave the box squats for much later.

If you are hurt, they are great. If you aren't then you probably aren't going to see a whole lot of carryover to your squat. Box squats look more like a good deadlift than they do a good squat.
