Not sure if this will help ya or not. I know La Crosse, Wisconsin has a powerlifting team, but as stated, powerlifting isn't considered a sport and colleges.

I am the president of the Powerlifting team at the University of Florida. We are a club sport but we do get University funding. Here is our website.

Where do you live? I may be able to help you find a college near you that offers it. Texas and Louisiana are big collegiate powerlifting states.

I couldn't find one but here is a link to a Nebraska Powerlifting site. The collegiate nationals were held in Omaha a couple of years ago but I don't think there is a collegiate team in Nebraska.

You are right about the fact that it is a rec sport and that you shouldn't base your college decision around it. However, you are off base about having to pay your own way to a meet. Our team gets funding from the University and most of the costs (meet fee's, gas, and hotels) are paid for. Now maybe not all college's are like that but I am sure there are more besides ours. We also get funding for equipment such as chains, bands, boards, etc...

^ the website didn't work, but where do you guys meet? and when you say you get money from the University, what does that allow you to do that other clubs can't?

It is a slow and difficult process. The biggest problem I have had with my uni club is the lack of equipment at the gym and my lack of a fortune to buy suitable facilities for a large group to train simultaneously. I think this is very important because unless you are there for every training session you will find people doing a lot of stupid shi as newbs do and when you occasionally see them lift you can't help but shake your head. What is worse is that correcting an issue that could have been ingrained for months requires direct supervision for weeks and perhaps months which is unlikely to occur.
Then of course you have all the administrative/organizational duties that you have to take on yourself.
OP should join an established club.
Edit: I actually chose my university based on the proximity to powerlifting meets and a powerlifter I met at a previous competition. Didn't get to train with him much though since he had given up on powerlifting by the time I joined the uni. Although I did train up a guy whom I train with now which is very rewarding.Last edited by Heavy_Beats; 01-23-2012 at 02:33 AM.

for your club or all college teams? Theres a **** ton of us that run our club here that we might be able to help on.
My club was just formed the year prior of me getting there, was small as hell maybe 8 people. Its up around 25 now and we have me and 2 other lifters who have totaled elite. Its nice to know when youre graduating its going in a good direction.
