People do not lift much in prison. They feed you a chitty high carb, low protein diet. They do not want you to become stronger than the guards. In fact, most guards can kick the crap out of inmates pretty easily due to this alone. There are plenty of cardio options (i.e. basketball). In short, they want you to be weak.

Prison rape was a rare occurrence where I did my time (Homestead Correctional Institute). Gangs were prevalent, but never really did much. Everyone was pretty chill.

Nah. In fact, I never even witnessed it. Maybe in some prisons with a lot of violent offenders it would have been more common, but not where I was. Guards would immediately break it up if something like that was going on.

And you only got 3 years for that? Hard to say if you had a great lawyer (for only getting 3 years) or a horrible one for not getting you a lesser charge than that.

Statistics say that offenders will likely repeat, but I remain optimistic. I met guys who had 4 year degrees, families, and seemed to live normal life. Most of the guys I knew were not violent criminals. I was surprised how many were in there for getting 5+ DUI's. A friend of mine got charged with kidnapping because he was picking up his daughter from school. His ex-wife went ape **** over it and called the cops. The guy was already on probation, so he got a 6 month sentence.

However, I do think violent offenders and rapist will repeat.
