Reading a lot of reviews on Amazon on various models but not looking to spend more than $500, will get what I pay most likely but just want to run mostly.

look up Absolute Fitness Solutions in York PA. They refurbish commercial machines, no idea if any are in your price range but that's where I would start.

Those are crap. You will have to buy used to get anything of quality. Look for a Sole F63 or F80. Unlike other types of fitness equipment, consumer grade gear rarely is a match for commercial grade. You're either paying $500-1000 for a good used consumer quality treadmill, or you're going to have pay $2,000 or so for a good commercial grade treadmill. The difference in price matches the difference in the ride. Whichever treadmill you buy, if you buy used, look for the manual online so you can see how to read that particular model's screen for number of hours operated and distance travelled.
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Correct. And you have to be careful with reviews. The F63 has larger rollers and a stronger motor than the F60. The F80 would be a better choice if going with a Sole, which is not a bad tread. My preference would be to find a refurbed Landice, Precor, LF, Cybex or Matrix but that would still be beyond his budget.
